Title: Warriors' Matters [Reservations Open!] [Off Topic]
Post by: Raddeo on March 25, 2016, 04:33:10 pm
(https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Foi68.tinypic.com%2F4kwdhu.jpg&hash=e0847e05397e3679e297e980bf2809fb5d348425)

Hey! Yes, you! You seems to be a tough man, a man who deserves more than he has. For how long have you lived in the shadow of others? Of your king, your liege, even of your own brother? But now you have a chance to get what should be yours long ago. A fame, and a fortune! It's your fate, your destiny, so don't be afraid to fight for it!

Description
Warriors' matters is in no way similar to any other game in this forum. It's neither Mafia nor Roll to Dodge, it's even not another BoP game. You don't have to remember any kind of statistics, you don't have to think about any international events or any matters from the past of the game. The only thing that matters is whether you can or cannot describe your actions in interesting way.

In Warrior's matters you're going to take part in series of duels against other players. Each fight will last ten turns and in each turn both players can write one post describing their actions. There are no any statistics, special skills or dice rolls, so the course of fight will depend only on players' actions and answers. After ten turns both players will be asked if they want to continue their duel. If they both agree, then duel will last five more turns. If not, the fight will be finished and GameMaster will create the pool to ask all forum users which player performed more interesting actions and wrote better descriptions of them. The winner will be chosen in this pool and will past to the next round where he will face winners of other duels.

To sum up, this game is like writing a chapter of a fantasy book. All you have to do is to describe your fight in most interesting way and then let users decide if they like your writing. What you have to remember is that you can only describe actions of your own character, don't try to enforce your opponent to do what you want by writing about his actions - GameMaster will have to intervene in such situation. You also have to remember, that you don't really want to make your character win the fight - it doesn't matter which character seems to win at the end of battle, only users' votes matter. So don't make your character too powerful, maybe even consider letting your enemy hurt you or destroy your gear if it will allow you to make story more interesting.

Of course at least two players are needed to start this game, but any number can take part as we can perform many duels simultaneously.

Creating character
This game is not set in any particular times or universe. Feel free to create characters from any historical era or fantasy universe you like. In case of historical settings please don't go beyond half of 19th century and in case of fantasy universe make sure that historical counterpart of your world doesn't exceed that period. If you choose fantasy settings please make sure that it's well known world or describe all important matters during creation of character. Another important fact is that your character have to be able to take part in typical medieval-like duel - so making ranged-only character isn't best idea and you will probably be asked to change it. Beside that, you can make any character you want either on horse or on foot, a bearded viking, mysterious wizard or an elegant officer of Napoleon's guard.

Applications
To join the game just fill this form and post it in this topic. Remember, that there are no any statistics in this game. All informations from this form are there only to let your enemy know who he is fighting against, what he can expect and how he can interact with your character. Name: Jean-Baptiste de Villiers

Appearance: A youthful man, in his early twenties, skinny cheeks. Brown eyes, a big nose. His hair on his head was ginger, reasonably sized, and forms a huge beard on his face.

History: He was born in 1785, in a small village in Southern France to a veteran dad, who served during the Seven Years' War where he lost his leg, and a farmer woman. He had two elder brothers and three younger brothers and another two younger sisters. He joined the French Army in 1803, the same year of the crowning of Napoleon, into the 15th Infantry Regiment. It was during the Third Coalition, and Jean-Baptiste fought valiantly at the famous battles of Ulm and Austerlitz, right the way through until the end of the year, where he was promoted into the grenadier company of the regiment in 1806.

When peace was made, Jean-Baptiste returned to his home village for a few months before the war broke out. During the campaign, he helped with labour: broke in gates, chopped gaps in palisades, built small bridges or destroyed them, broke garden walls and created loopholes. He might as well have been a sapper, and he was, when he was promoted in 1807. He served as a sapper in the devastating defeat for the Prussians at Jena-Auerstedt and was overjoyed when peace was made.

Equipment: An axe, stick of dynamite, an antique flintlock pistol found off a dead Prussian

Skills:: Fierce warcry, very strong and heavy

English level: I am fluent in English.

Woah, we have first players. I think that we'll wait few days to see how many we can gather and then we'll start with first duels.

The Mighty McLovin, it's your English level in the last field, not of your character :D As main task in this game is to write good and interesting story in English, it will be useful for me to know how well you can speak this tongue.

So we have three players for now. If no one new joins, then I'll make my own character so we will have two pairs. And we'll start tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

DoctorWarband, I'm afraid I have to ask you to change your character a bit. As I've said in the first post, upper limit for historical setting of character is about half of 19th century. As far as I know Magnum guns weren't invented until half of 20th century. The reason why I've decided to limit everything to about 1850 is because repeating firearms aren't best choice for medieval-like duels. Also decline of traditional melee weapons is a problem of those times. So if it's not a big problem for you, I'd ask you to alter it a bit.

It would be best to ban all firearms. I chose a French sapper, and I could have chosen a musket, but I didn't.

But loading of such early firearm takes at least several seconds. So in fact it can be fired just once (or twice if someone is stubborn enough to describe it) before enemy comes close enough to start melee fight if he wants. So it can be easily used to make fight more interesting (bullet can hit a shield, can miss, can just hurt you, enemy can write how his character is surprised by such weapon, etc). And as in this game it's all about players imaginations and ability to write, then it's not a big problem, that someone fires at you once or twice with quite inaccurate weapon. But I can't think about any way to describe how you survive a series of six shots from revolver from half of 20th century.
You did a great thing, you could make stronger character, with musket, pistol, cannon and a barrel of TNT, but you didn't to maintain a game's atmosphere. And that's what we have to expect from all players, creating more bans won't change anything in my opinion. If someone wants to destroy the game and be overpowered superman, he will also without a gun ;)

The Mighty McLovin, of course, feel free to change it if you want to. But if you add mentioned barrel of TNT, I'll lock a thread and it will be over, I warn you :D

The J, great, we'll probably start in two days so you have some time to create your character. Btw. I've seen your game too, I even wanted to join, but those statistics, calculations, skills, etc. terrified me. I hope that you don't feel like I've stolen your idea ;)

Name: 游侠, yóuxiá, Youxia. (Pronounced You-Shah)

Appearence:Youxia is taller than most people around him, but not by much. He almost always has a calm demeanor due to his extensive learning in Taoism. He usually wears traditional Chinese garb when outside of combat, and wears traditional body guard armor when in combat
(Rough look)

History:Little is known about Youxia's past, but people generally know that he was taken in by a Taoist monastery at a young age. It is thought that he mastered meditation, Taoist Literature, and gardening in the monastery. Alongside this, he learned fighting skills extensively. He would make frequent trips outside of the monastery to meditate better. It is thought that his monastery was slaughtered by a group of bandits while he was out one day.

Youxia spent the next five years tracking down these bandits and perfecting his technique. When he finally found the bandits, he started to hunt down their patrols. When he learned of a government official that was in the pockets of the bandits, he found said official and confronted him about his actions. The local official told Youxia that he had to help them, otherwise they were going to kill his children, and that the official really did not like the bandits. After hearing this, Youxia beheaded the official who would betray the emperor for his children.

He then soon executed the bandit leader. The emperor heard of his heroic deeds, and invited Youxia to become the emperors personal bodyguard. Youxia accepted, and is where he is right now as in charge of the emperors personal security.

Equipment: Youxia has a Ji, an ancient Chinese pole arm. Think of the Ji as quasi-halbird, but less heavy and a bigger focus on stabbing instead of swinging.

The close range weapon he has is his Jian. It is a double-edged straight sword. He rarely uses the Jian unless he has to, preferring to rely on his pole arms.

Skills: Master of Tai Chi, a martial art that is wholly focused on using an opponents strength against them. He is also extensively trained in Taoism and meditation, which means in a combat situation he knows how to stay calm in a bad situation. His pole arm technique is second to none in China.

He is also a master of ambushes, which he only tries to use against opponents with a focus on ranged weapons. If his opponent is using a melee weapon, he will honorably go out and dual. The only exception to this rule is when someone threatens his family or his emperor, where he will attempt to kill them with everything he has.

Welcome in the arena Portals! I haven't expected anyone from ancient China, it seems we're going to have very interesting mix of characters.

As Stark99 was unfortunately banned from this forum, we've also lost one player. What's more, almost a week have passed since The J announced he want to take part in this game. I believe the waiting time is over, and this evening we'll definitely start the game, with him or without. So if anyone's interested, he have few more hours to create character. If no one shows up, I'll join to make even number of player.

Soo... It's late evening already, but as I've promised, we're starting our duels right now. Because no one appeared who would fulfill game's rules I'll join myself.

Name: Thorstein Höskuldsson
Appearance: Thorstein is tall and in good shape. He has broad shoulders and muscled arms. His face is pleasant to behold, but none would call him extremely handsome. His long, fair and a bit curly hair he often braids or binds with several silver bands. His beard is shaved on the sides, but moustache and hair on his chin is braided together.
History: Born around middle of 10th century somewhere in western Norway as son of Höskuld, who was wealthy enough to have own longship with thirty men. When he was teenager he took part in several of his father's raids in England and on Baltic Sea. There he learned how to fight in a shieldwall, use bow and throwing spear, but also how to trade and deal with foreigners. In England he received prima signatio in spite of being invader there. In consequence their relations with king Haakon Sigurdsson get worse and after battle of Hjörungavágr he banished Thorstein as potential enemy. Höskuld already died few years before the battle.
Thorstein left Norway and on the longship inherited from his father he sailed east to Kievan Ruś. There he joined prince Vladimir's druzhina. Thorstein quickly gained prince's friendship and in  988 he baptised and became follower of Eastern Orthodox Church. After those events he was ordered to take part in putting down rebels in Byzantine Empire. There he visited Constantinople and became even more devoted Christian. When rebel have ended he returned to Novgorod to serve prince Vladimir and spread new religion amongst pagan citizen of Ruś
Equipment: Spear and round shield are most favored by Thorstein. Sometimes he also uses axe with short haft and long curved beard. When everything else fails, he uses small sax knife with hilt made of horn.
Skills: Well trained in shieldwall fighting style, as experienced mariner he can easily keep balance and stay in place even when attacked by stronger enemy. He have seen quite big part of world, so it's difficult to surprise him with anything new.
English level: Communicative

Now there are four player, it makes two pairs. Pair will be chosen randomly, as well as person who enters the arena as the first one.
I'll create Game Thread in a moment, where all duelists can post their actions. I want to remind you, that GM will in no way affect you actions, everything you post happens immediately. Because of that you don't have to wait for any kind of confirmation of your actions and can post right after your opponent.

This thread will remain open and will serve as Off Topic Thread for now. If you have any questions feel free to ask in this topic, via PM or Steam.

Windflower, if there are enough players we will for sure start another series of duels after this one, so probably you'll have a chance to join then if you want to ;)

And quick info (or rather request) for all players - please, add information about your duel (who is fighting who and number of your post) at the beginning of your each post in the same way I did in mine. It will make it easier to see when duels should end. I forgot to ask you to do that in my previous post.

I've talked with Portals and unfortunately he won't take part in our game. It means that Mighty McLovin vs Portals duel can't be played. Also Mighty McLovin decided that he won't claim a victory by walkover to pass to second round without fighting in the first one. So the only valid duel in the first season of fights is one between me and DoctorWarband. We will play it to the end and its winner will be announced to be winner of whole first season.

It leads to the conclusion that the end of first season of Warriors' Matters is near. So it's time to open recruitment for second season, which I hope will gather more players and will last much longer. Our fight in Game Topic may be considered to be example of how this game works and what players can do. Anyone who want to try his imagination, writing skill and roleplaying ability is welcomed to join the game.

Name: Audrich Ollsen

Appearance: A man in his late thirties. Small beer gut, large arms. Chiseled jaw, blonde man bun and green eyes. Often wears no shirt only an Emerald amulet on his chest with moderate pectorals. Huge calves thick hamstrings. Skinny shoulders, not very much hair only with a little scruff on his jaw. Measures 1.67 meters in height (5.5 feet) and weighs 63.5 kilograms (140 pounds).

History: A man born into the hands of an old fisherman from northern Norway, Audrich loved the sea, always going out on his “expeditions” with his dad ever since he was 10 years of age. As his 12th birthday came around his father coincidentally died of hypothermia after a long fishing trip in the winter. For 5 years he, his 4 sisters and mother lived off of trifles of pity. Often spending night and day only begging. In commemoration of his father Audrich continued on his “expeditions” at sea, once in a while finding a fish to sell. Now 17 with all four of his sisters and mother taking up the “job” of prostitution, Audrich needed to be able to provide for his family. Not so long after, rumor passed that all men of Scandinavian descent were invited to join The Varangian Guard, payed to serve the Byzantine Emperor himself! Hoping that this commitment may possibly bring him great fortune and even prestige he eagerly took the job, promising his family to return in 15 years. Often fighting shirtless, over the course of his employment, Audrich gained many battle scars worthy of great acknowledgement as well as the skill of the dual wield axe. Despite Audrich’s great skill and gallantness in battle, Audrich obtained little recognition often being cheated out of his share of loot, credit and women. Keeping his promise Audrich returned home finding both his mother and one of his sisters died of childbirth, “accidents” they bore as a result of their prostitution. Audrich devastated, visited their burning beds and payed his respects by burning their shares of the loot. Audrich was simply bored, he often reminisced his nostalgic times of glory and battle, coming to the consensus that he had to complete his final expedition, knowing for a fact that this would be his last whether his end be met by disease or blade. I'm a bit surprised that this topic survived Duuring's last cleaning, but it did, so I feel obligated to revive it a bit.
Only to players have signed to take part in new season of Warriors' Matters, but still, it's enough to start one duel. So if both of you are still interested in playing, then I can open an arena for you and let you show us your writing talent. Of course it would be just for fun, not for any kind of victory, as it's difficult to make proper tournament with just two players, but nonetheless I would be glad to let you play it, if you want to, of course.
