There's this old folks home near my house which is about 3 stories and made of brick and not very heavily populated currently. I would gather the friends and family that I could save, and move in to the old folks home. The thing is like a castle but with electricity
board up and barricade every entrance, and then destroy the stairs leading to the 2nd floor and replace them with rope ladders which can be raised or lowered - this way the nommers can't get up but my people can get up and down. In addition to the supplies I and my companions will bring with us, the old folks home is bound to have medical supplies as well as food and water. The advantage to the old folks home is that it's not guarded, it's built like a fort, it's sanitary, and nobody would think to go there for raiding, everybody always talks about going to gun shops and grocery stores and walmarts so the chance of clashing with another group of people is unlikely. And having 3 floors and a roof gives us a good view of everything around us.
You might be wondering what I'll do when the food stocks run out, well there is a large state park nearby which means lots of game (squirrels, coons, opossum, deer, and plants) as well as plenty of firewood and wood for building fortifications. In addition to that, we can also raid the nearby neighborhoods for food and water. And seeing as there are a number of houses within range of the old folks home, a sniper on the roof could provide covering fire to the raiding party, or if the range is too great, he could at least give them an eye in the sky on their surroundings. There is also a good deal of land resting around the building which would be great for farming, gradually over time I would have my group build a wall, piece by piece to protect the farm. Seeing as it is a large structure with plenty of rooms, and we would be able to sustain ourselves for a long time, the fortification would easily be enough for my friends and family to take shelter and survive.
As far as combating the undead goes, I personally do not think that modern tactical gear will always be right for a zombie apocalypse scenario. It's designed for firefights with other guys who have guns, not for fighting off a mindless zombie trying to rip a chunk out of you with his teeth. And seeing as I have the physique to engage in a melee scenario and not fall breathless within minutes, I personally would feel much safer using melee weaponry rather than firearms - if I were skilled enough with a bow and arrow I would almost certainly use one, maybe the apocalypse would provide me with enough time to learn lol - for the simple reasons of 1) there is no reloading a melee weapon 2) melee weapons don't make noises that attract nommers 3) a melee weapon doesn't jam 4) you can purchase a combat-built melee weapon very inexpensively and without any kind of registration or troubles. This does not mean I will completely forgo firearms, that would be silly. But I would prefer to use them only against raiders or looters rather than undead who can't shoot back.
