Title: Issue with posting
Post by: GeneralSquirts on October 12, 2016, 05:17:17 pm
I've notice that whenever I'm typing something with some BB Code in the text that all of a sudden the message body or the text is no longer there and does not show up on my preview screen nor does the forum detect any text of any kind. Not sure what the issue is, but wanted it to be noted.

It would appear quite a few of us are experiencing this issue.

I did some experimenting, the issue seems to revolve around spoilers I believe and when you use specific BB codes within a set of spoilers? I tried adding Font Faces and Font Coloring inside of a set of spoilers and that seemed to trigger the glitch. Not sure if that is the specific cause. Anyone else have an issue with this specifically?

Actually its worse, when you copy tables from one thread to another, it'll just disappear and I think one of the ways around that is RE-writing the code :(

If you add any text besides what you pasted in and than click post/preview does anything show up then?
Yes, I tried that yesterday when I was testing the problem for Duuring. Let's say I also typed up the Summary under the Update, you know "Corsican fighting Austria with Britain, woo scary, Russia doing stuff, It's a European War wooooo". The Summary would show up once I hit Preview and Post, however the Spoiler and everything inside it would simply disappear. And if after posting I quoted the post to see if the BB code was still there, just invisible, the BB code would disappear after posting as well.

I tried it with test posts on the OOC thread and the same problem occurred during my test PM's and even in my PM to Duuring about the issue.  :-\

The issue is being resolved by Duuring and the devs, however I just wanted to bring attention to the problem in case any of you all experience it or figure out a way to work around or even fix it.

Major Edit: So I sent BBJ a portion of the update (without detailed information regarding battles/major events of course) upon his request to look into the issue. One of the Battle spoilers in the update that I scrolled up to hide in my screenshots was a naval battle. In the text I sent to BBJ, the battle name and some words were typed. These words were formatted in the usual way I normally type: Font Times New roman, Font size 12, center, etc. He pressed Preview and got the same error that I got. However, upon deleting all of the bb code in the naval battle event spoiler, the message returned to normal and he could preview it no problem. The event obv was just normal standard fse text however it was visible.

We can now reasonably conclude, thanks to BabyJ, that the problem lies somewhere between FSE's BB code and FSE's spoilers. Perhaps some of the BB code bugs out when in spoilers or there is a conflict when BB code is inserted inside a spoiler which is already inside the main spoiler. We still don't know for sure, however it should help in figuring out what exactly the problem is. Thanks to BBJ for figuring out that crucial piece.

We are aware of the problem and are trying to figure it out. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Think Duuring is waiting for the actual FSE staff to actually find the issue themselves, Duuring can only do so much on his end. At this rate we're expecting an update from the same guys who give BCoF updates.... so.... be prepared to wait five years.

I mean obviously if any of us could do anything about it we would have. We can see if there are any updates in terms of the SMF version, but it would require FSE devs to implement afaik. Personally I have very little technical knowledge about forums/CMSs so I wouldn't really know where to begin looking about it. How long has the problem actually been happening? I haven't run into it yet, but I don't do much with BBCode anyway.

I've heard of this today, someone contacted me on steam about it. I have been looking into it the past hour, so far I have no solution or idea why it is happening, and without an accurate timeframe when it started happen I can not really tell whether it was an update/mod or anything like that... Vince is currently away, I will talk to him about it when he is back.

The Draft system started mildly bugging out sometime in the last week of September. While I noticed the BB code & drafts start to implode within the first week of October like BBj said.

We did a SMF update in september, I believe. Maybe the Draft mod needs an update then, if it is linked to that...
I will investigate, thanks.

Deinstalled the drafts mod. I searched for it and it should not be causing it, but for now, lets see if it works. Please test.

Looking through my posts, the last post I could make with a bunch of BB code was Sept 28th. I noticed the problem in the beginning of Oct. Did anything update or did something happen on Oct 1st-2nd?

I've been doing some more testing (Kind of had to considering what I do on FSE requires me to use BB code) and I've also been thinking about the problems. I think the problem lies in an error with the BB code. Maybe the new update changed the way or priority of how BB code was read? Like (Center - Times new Roman - size 12 - B) in that order before the update worked, but now the update changed it so it doesn't work unless it's in, say, reverse order? Drafts worked for me when I didn't use any BB code (besides spoilers), and using BB code also kills regular posts and PMs, so it's more than likely a BB code problem... or something. I don't really know  :-[ Perhaps rolling back to before whatever was updated would fix?

Major Edit: PM-ing is also broken in a major way. I was PMing myself a message for the Forum Game I'm running. I had the tab open and was (and still am) constantly editing it. I had to PM DoctorWarband something that I needed him to do, so I opened a separate tab and PM'd him. I typed the message and hit preview to make sure it worked. The message worked but the text in the PM I was sending to DoctorWarband changed to the text of the other Tab I had open.  :-[ I did not tamper with it in any way, I merely hit preview. What is being previewed is my PM to DoctorWarband, ie what I typed in that PM. What appears in the actual typing box is the text for my other PM. I have permission from DoctorWarband to post the PM to him, I can post screenshot as well if needed or you can ask him.

Why is FSE breaking?  :-\

I don't know, I have no idea. All I can say that it might have happened after our server crashed and we had to reboot the forums from an old backup... But I don't exactly remember when that was. It might fit in the timeframe though.
I re-added the drafts mod for now, as it does not seem to be the one that is breaking everything.

Ive tested some other mods, deinstalled, installed them all without any real success. We could roll back to an old forum software version, but that might allow hackers to get in. Which is not very nice, and I would like not to consider doing that.

After spending way too much time on this I fixed it.

Turned out in the .12 Security update that prevents people from injecting posts upon other people they added some really restrictive posting code.

I digged deep in the .12 patch and found the code they added and modified the PHP so it is still secure as before but at least fixes this stupid bug.

Sorry for taking so long but it took us a whole lot of time to find it.

Cheers guys!

It was probably related in the way the post code got handled by this security mess they created which was not working correctly.

Button for posting got cut?
Explain   ;)

Fixed.

We removed the spell checking package, but it did not delete itself completely.

Should be good now.

It's useless because nowadays all browsers have build in spellchecking.
