So, I started a game as the Doge of Kent, and it was going very well until my first character died, and it said the game was over because my primary title became a republic. What? I had an heir as well, so I have no idea why that happened.

I just started a new game as the Grand Mayor of Holstein, so we'll see how that goes.

Anyone know why it would end my game when my first character died even though I had an heir?

Was your(or your son's) capital on a coastal province? if not then that's why, when you die and your son becomes king if your capital is not on a coastal province it terms him into an unplayable republic so you need a coastal capital or if your son is landed then his capital needs to be a coastal province.

It wouldn't let me set a capital. It didn't even have a map marker for my duchy on the map. Could that be it?

Started as William the conqueror, created the duchy of kent, and then gave it to a vassal mayor. Lately I've just been doing it through console commands because it's much more efficient that way.

Did your son/heir have some land?

Nope, but an hour ago I started a game as the Grand Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, and I just had to have my son be the heir of one of my holdings on the coast, and it let me keep playing. So yes, I do think it has something do to with your holdings being on the coast.
