4. Westpreußische Artillerie

Welcome to the thread of the 4. Westpreußische Artillerie! We are a NA Foreign Intervention artillery regiment for North and South. We plan to become an artillery force to be reckoned with on the battlefields of North and South.


Regimental History

The Prussian Army fought in three wars around the time of the American Civil War. These were the Danish-Prussian War (1864), the Seven Weeks War (1866) and the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). The Prussian Army was remarkably successful during these wars, due to its ability to quickly mobilize through effective use of railroads. The Prussian Army's organization was far superior to the French, Austrian, and Danish armies, which led to the relativly swift defeats of those countries. This effectiveness of the Prussian army was very important in the campaign for German Unification that Bismarck and the Prussian nation had embarked upon.
Artillery in the Prussian Army was a well organized and effective branch. Prussian Infantrymen found their Dreyse outclassed by the French Chassepot, but at the same time the French found their rifled Napoleon's outclassed by Prussian breech-loading Krupp artillery. Prussian artillery outclassed their opponents time and time again, and the long range advantage this gave the Prussians meant devestation for their opponents. Krupp guns played an important part in demolishing fortifications at the Siege of Paris, and were indeispensible when bombarding the enemy from long range on the battlefield. The explosive shells fired from the cannons inflicted massive casualties, and the faster breech-loading reloading time meant it could fire deadlier shells at a faster rate than any other artillery on the battlefield.

Lowest-ranking NCO. Assists the sergeant and is proficient in artillery tactics. (Max 2)

A proficient ranker. Is a confident and effective artilleryman. (Unlimited)
Kanonier
New addition to the regiment. Is expected to learn how to be an effective part of the battery. (Unlimited)[/size]

Later that year, those battalions formed their own regiment called the Regiment de Savoie-Carigan. In 1791 it was given the numeral identification of 34e Regiment d'Infanterie. During the French Revolutionary Wars, the regiment saw service at the battles of Nerwinden, Hondschoote, Wattingnies, and Fleurus. The regiment was reorganized into the 34e Demi Brigade in 1793, consisting of extra battalions from the 2e bataillon, 17e Regiment d'Infanterie, 4e bataillon, Volontaires de la Moselle, and 3e bataillon, Volontaires de la Meuse. It was once more reorganized in 1796, becoming the 34e Demi-Brigade d'Infanterie de Ligne, consisting of  the 1er and 2e bataillons, 67e Regiment d'Infanterie, 85e demi-brigade de bataille(1er Bat, 43e Regt d'Inf, 1er Bat Vol de la Haute-Marne and 5e Bat Vol du Haute-Rhin), 148e demi-brigade de bataille(2e Bat, 80e Regt d'Inf, 7e and 11e Bat Vol de la Gironde, 2e bataillon, Volontaires de Paris, 3e bataillon, Volontaires de Seine-et-Oise, and 3e bataillon, Volontaires d'Arras.[/font][/size][/td]

It was present at the battles of Ulm and Austrelitz in 1805, and the battles of Saalfeld, Jena, and Pultusk. In 1807 it was present during Napoleon's Friedland campaign. It was Deployed to the Iberian Penninsula in 1809, where it was present at the bloody Siege of Saragossa, as well as the battles of Bussaco, Villagarcia, Badajoz, and Burgos. During the 100 Days Campaign, it fought at Ligny and Wavre, but was not present at Waterloo. The Regiment sported the battle honors of Austrelitz and Friedland on its colors. It was among the most widely traveled regiments of the Napoleonic Wars, serving in Napoleon's most important campaigns.[/font][/size][/td][/tr][/table]

By the way, the Breech loaders weren't developed until after the Prussian's found their artillery horribly outclassed in 1866 :P
