Optimates / Legio X Gemina (K-KA) - Recruiting!

Legio X Gemina - K-KA

Legio X Gemina: one of the Roman legions.  Its name means 'the twin legion'.
With the seventh, eighth, and ninth legions, the Tenth was among the oldest units of the imperial Roman army. They were with Julius Caesar when he invaded Gaul in 58 BCE and the Roman commander mentions the tenth legion in his accounts of an encounter with the Germanic leader Ariovistus (where Caesar states that he always trusted this unit completely). The soldiers of the tenth legion are also mentioned in the battle against the Nervians in 57 (where they saved the day), the invasion of Britain in the summer of 55 (where the standard bearer of the Tenth played a heroic role), and the siege of Gergovia in 52. The soldiers must have taken part in many other engagements as well. It is possible that the tenth legion was already called Equestris ('mounted'), because Caesar describes how he employed the soldiers as cavalry.

In the civil war against Caesar's fellow-triumvir Pompey, the Tenth fought in Hispania in the battle of Ilerda (summer 49). In the spring of 48, the soldiers of this unit served at Dyrrhachium. It was present in the battle of Pharsalus (9 August 48), and although the soldiers were sent back to Italy after the battle to be pensioned off, they also participated in Caesar's African campaign in 46. Finally, the tenth legion was present at Munda in Andalusia (17 March 45). On their way back, the veterans finally received land at Narbo Martius in southern Gaul.
On 15 March 44, Caesar was assassinated and a new civil war broke out. In the first round, Caesar's relative Octavian demanded a share in the leadership of the Caesarian party, in the second round Octavian, Marc Antony and Lepidus (the Second Triumvirate) attacked the assassins, Brutus and Cassius. To this end, the tenth legion Equestris was reconstituted by Lepidus (in the winter of 44/43).

In 42, the refounded tenth legion fought for the triumvirs in the battle of Philippi, where the opponents of the Caesarian party were defeated. After their victory, veterans were settled at Cremona in northern Italy.
The Tenth was now transferred to the East and participated in Marc Antony's war against the Parthian empire and his invasion of Armenia (36-34). In these years, the relations between Octavian and Marc Antony deteriorated, and this culminated in Antony's ill-fated Actium campaign (31), where Octavian defeated his fellow-triumvir. The tenth legion was among the troops that surrendered to the new sole ruler of the empire.

Octavian settled veterans at Patras. However, the Tenth revolted and was punished: it lost its prestigious name Equestris. Veterans from other legions were added to the unit, and it was from now on called X Gemina ('the twin legion'). Octavian, now known as the emperor Augustus, sent the Tenth to Petavonium in Hispania Tarraconensis (modern Rosinos de Vidriales).
The legion took part in Augustus' campaigns against the Cantabrians, which lasted from 25-13 BCE and were intended to make the Ocean the frontier of the empire. This was a very large war: among the other troops involved were I Germanica, II Augusta, IIII Macedonica, V Alaudae, VI Victrix (which seems to have shared its base, perhaps near Braga, with our unit), VIIII Hispana, XX Valeria Victrix, and another legion, perhaps VIII Augusta. Soldiers of this unit and VI Victrix were among the first settlers of Mérida, Cordoba, and Zaragoza.

After a stay of almost a century in Hispania Tarraconensis, the tenth 'twin' legion was sent to Carnuntum in Pannonia, a bit east of modern Vienna. The precise year of the transfer is not known, but 63 (or a bit earlier) is a good guess, because in that year, XV Apollinaris left Carnuntum and went to the east to fight in Corbulo's war against the Parthians.
During the brief reign of the emperor Galba (68-69), the Tenth was transferred back to Hispania - something the soldiers must have appreciated. A recently created legion, VII Galbiana, was to be the new garrison of Carnuntum.

However, the Tenth' stay in Hispania was to be very brief. In 70, the new emperor Vespasian sent his relative Quintus Petillius Cerialis to the Rhineland to suppress the rebellious Batavians. Immediately after their arrival in the province of Germania Inferior, the soldiers of the tenth legion had to defend themselves against enemy attacks at Arenacum (modern Rindern near Kleve), where they had their winter quarters. They were successful.
After they had restored order, they were ordered to garrison the Hunerberg, a hilltop east of Noviomagus (modern Nijmegen). Here, they guarded the Batavians. The soldiers of the Tenth must have hated the cold and wet country of the Lower Rhine that was to remain their home for a generation.

The fortress on the Hunerberg (which has been excavated) is not the only archaeological site connected to X Gemina. A country estate near Nijmegen called De Holdeurn was once the location of a large production center of tiles and pottery. There was also a sanctuary dedicated to the supreme god Jupiter, to Vesta, and to a local goddess named Hludana. The factory was to continue its production after the legion had left.
A similar production center was situated at an unknown site across the Rhine. Soldiers of the Tenth were also employed in a stone quarry in the valley of the Moselle, which was far outside the province of Germania Inferior. Several inscriptions attest that soldiers were active in Voorburg, Neuss, Gellep, and nearby Xanten, but the evidence is meager.

When in 89 the governor of Germania Superior, Lucius Antonius Saturninus, revolted against the emperor Domitian, the army of Germania Inferior (I Minervia, VI Victrix, X Gemina, XXII Primigenia) hurried to the south, to Mainz, and defeated the rebel. Every legion was awarded the title Pia Fidelis Domitiana ('faithful and loyal to Domitian'). The last part of this honorific title was dropped when this emperor was murdered in 96.

He was succeeded by an old senator named Nerva, who appointed the governor of Germania Inferior, Trajan, as his successor. He was in Cologne when he heard the news of Nerva's death (98), but did not return to Rome immediately. Instead, he seems to have ordered the reconstruction of the frontier zone of the Lower Rhine. Soldiers of the Tenth rebuilt several forts (e.g., Dormagen and Leiden-Roomburg) and constructed a dike along the Rhine. All these activities can dendrochronologically be dated to the first years of Trajan's reign (the trees were felled in 99/100). Probably, the renaming of Xanten and Nijmegen -henceforth Colonia Ulpia Traiana and Ulpia Noviomagus- and the building of a new temple at Elst, dedicated to the military god Hercules Magusanus, are related to this project.

Now that the frontier zone was improved, the Romans could transfer military units, and in 103, the tenth legion was first moved to Aquincum (modern Budapest) in Pannonia, only to be transferred to Vindobona (Vienna) after the war (in 114?). In both towns, X Gemina had to defend the Danube frontier. Both towns belonged to the province of Pannonia. These movements must have had something to do with Trajan's Second Dacian war (105-106), but there is still no evidence for active involvement, although one inscription suggests that the Tenth was part of a task force with I Minervia and VI Victrix from Bonn and Neuss.

During the reign of Hadrian, a subunit was sent to Judaea to fight against the messianic claimant Simon ben Kosiba, whose rebellion lasted from 132 to 136. Similar subunits were sent to Mauretania during the reign of Antoninus Pius (138-161) and to the east to take part in the Parthian war of Lucius Verus (162). During the reign of Marcus Aurelius, the tenth legion fought against the Quadi. (This emperor died in the legion's city Vindobona, in 180.) A base has been identified at Mušov in Czechia.
In the civil war after the assassination of the emperor Publius Helvius Pertinax in 193, the legion sided with the governor of Pannonia Superior, Lucius Septimius Severus. It seems that a subunit was sent to the east to take part in his wars against his rival Pescennius Niger and the Parthians, but the inscription that is used to prove this activity (from Ankara) may refer to another Parthian war. During the reign of Severus, several soldiers of the tenth legion were transferred to the imperial guard in Rome.

In the third century, the tenth legion received several surnames, which suggest its loyalty to the emperors Caracalla or Heliogabalus (211-217 or 218-222; Antoniniana), Gordian III (238-244; Gordiana), Decius (249-251; Deciana), Florianus (276; Floriana), and Carinus (283-285; Cariniana). From this set of rulers, Caracalla, Decius, and Carinus waged Germanic wars. Gordian III is known for a war against the Sasanian dynasty in Persia, and may have used a subunit of X Gemina. Why Florian, who ruled for a mere 88 days and never left Asia Minor, would award an honorific to a unit that was stationed on the banks of the Danube, is unknown.

In 235-238, X Gemina may -like neighboring units- have taken part in the emperor Maximinus' wars in Dacia and southern Germania. However, evidence is completely lacking, and perhaps it is no coincidence that we do not know about a surname Maximiniana. During the conflict between the emperor Gallienus (260-268) and his rival Postumus of the Gallic Empire, the legion certainly supported the first-mentioned, for which it was rewarded with surnames like Pia VI Fidelis VI ('six times faithful and loyal'). This proves that it was awarded the titles Pia II Fidelis II to Pia V Fidelis V in the 164 years between Domitian and Gallienus, but we have no idea when this happened.

The tenth, 'twin' legion was still in Vienna in the early fifth century.  Like almost all Caesarian legions, the emblem of this legion was a bull.

Other Games / [WB][S] Game of Thrones - [WIP]
« on: July 12, 2013, 11:01:51 pm »

For the NW community!

RELEASE DATE UNKNOWN !

Game of Thrones - A mod based on the universe created by the famous bestselling American Fantasy novelist George R. R. Martin in the series A Song of Ice and Fire, the first book of which is A Game of Thrones.

Concept
Spoiler
The mod is being developed taking account of the first 2 books, what happens later is beyond our concern.

The mod's story starts after the death of Renly Baratheon about 2 hours afterwards to be precise.

Everything that happens after the point mentioned above is the mod team's choice, although we will try to be consistent with the books as much as possible.

Everything that could happen afterwards could in theory happen in the mod.

We have out own ideas, and only need other peoples' ideas for the mod in the form of finished products (models, scripts, scenes, etc.)

The team is making this game because we love modding and realizing our ideas, not from the altruistic aim of bringing joy to other gamers in their otherwise difficult gaming lives.

To sum up: The team is composed of highly intelligent trolls, who are uninterested in other peoples' opinions.

In order for your own ideas to make it into the mod you need to achieve that level of intelligent trolling, in other words, become part of the team. Then work, work work and work some more on the mod. Thats the only way.

Regiments / Regiment Leaders Steam Contacts
« on: July 03, 2013, 10:41:49 pm »
Heyho Napoleonic Wars Community!

I noticed a while ago that those regimental leader steamgroups didn't really work out. I thought why not make a thread linking the steam account names of the regimental leaders? It's much easier to maintain and there is no way that it can be abused. So here we go, quite simple. Just to make it easier to find regimental leaders for linebattles/events etc on steam!

So if you are leader of a regiment, and you want to be put on the list so people can contact you. All I need to know before I can add you to the list is the next form/template!

Century of War - A Modification for Hearts of Iron III - TFH

First of all, seeing I wished to share this with the guy's from this community, I couldn't find a better place then this one to post this. Appologies if it is the wrong board etc. So... Anyway. This mod will be a total conversion from the World War II, back to 1850, where you will meet the American Civil War, the Crimean War, the Franco-Prussian war, World War I and back again to World War II. I'll be trying to give you the best view of the times, with events and decisions through out the game. And to make you enable to take part in these bloody wars as the nations of that time period! This mod will be made for Hearts of Iron III, the TFH expansion.

Planned Features
    • New Starting date! - 1850
    • New Bunch of Nations! : Confederate States, Prussia, Bavaria, and more!
    • New OOB's from the armies at the field before, during and after the American Civil War!
    • New Generals and ministers+Portraits for every nation.
    • New Technology tree, accurate to the time periods.
    • New Brigade sizes.
    • New Graphical designs.
    • New Events and decisions to get you through the years of history!
    • And more.

    Help me out! [Research work]
If you have the game, or have a great amount of knowledge of the time span between 1850 on to 1950 (around 1850 esp) then do me a favour and share what you know about the armies from that time, (France, United Kingdom, Prussia, Ottomans, Netherlands etc), their generals, and what weapons they used. Also if you have some sweet pictures or portraits then that would be greatly appreciated as well, and save me a lot of search and research work! I'm sure there are some great historians around here so let hear from yourself!

To some it all up on what I need. Everything around the year of 1850 of every country. (Somewhat).

    - Division/Army and Corps names.
    - Division/Army and Corps General names.
    - Guns used, Cavalry guns, Artillery, Infantry.
    - Ministers, Presidents, nation leaders.
    - Total amount of troops (Manpower).

    Regiments / Boer Commando's
    « on: March 05, 2013, 09:02:03 pm »

    History of the Unit

    Quote
In 1795, with the First British Occupation and again in 1806 with the Second British Occupation, the commandos were called up to defend the Cape Colony. At the Battle of Blaauwberg ( 6 January 1806), the Swellendam Commando held the British off long enough for the rest of the Batavian army to retreat to safety.
Under British rule, the Cape Colony continued to use the commando system in its frontier wars, in addition to regular British imperial troops. Boer commandos fought alongside Fengu, English settler, Khoi-khoi and other ethnic groups in units which were often mixed. Light, mobile commandos were undeniably better-suited than the slow-moving columns of imperial troops, for warfare in the rough frontier mountains. However, tensions often arose in the Cape's government over the relative merits and control of these two parallel military systems.
During the Great Trek, this system was used and remained in use in the Boer republics. Both republics issued commando laws, making commando service mandatory in times of need for all male citizens between the ages of 16 and 60. During the Anglo-Boer War ( 1899–1902) the Boer commando formed the backbone of the Boer forces.

    Unit's Information

    Hello there!

After the newest patch (v0.4) Onii and me decided that it would be fun to create a unit for this mod. We are a small then also, and group that aims to be a fun group to play with, without to much regimental shit. (Trainings etc). We play when we feel like it, and trainings will only be held when the members want it. We will play as the actual Boer Commando unit as our name shows here, And we will join events also when we feel like it to play a bit. This is basically just a side thing for us to have some fun, and anyone is welcome to join us and play with us. And have some fun of course! :)

    Unit Roster

    Captain: Gokiller
    Lieutenant: Onii Chan

    Sergeant: Duuring

    Private: Ardagh
    Private: Reverse
    Private: George Mackintosh

Either that or leave an message on the thread with your steam account name and we will contact you quickly. :)

    Additional Information

    - We play in-game as the Boer Commando class/unit.
    - We are a combination of Light Infantry (Dismounted) and Cavalry
    - Our in-game tagg is : BC_Rank_Username

Modifications / What comes up with creating your own mod? Read here!
    « on: February 27, 2013, 05:55:15 pm »
    Hello Napoleonic Wars Community!

Looking to start a mod? But have no idea what comes with it? And where you will have to deal with? Take a look here! It might just help you out in having a better idea how to create a modification. And how to handle it! And the steps into it? I hope this will help you!
Though!!! I made and shared this from my own experience, to help new lads to create modifications! And create the choice for the community in modifications! So for the more experienced peeps in the modding world, that are hanging around here. : Don't be to harsh.  :-[

    Have fun with modding! :)

Take note! This "tutorial" isn't made for actually modding, though it is for the theory and information that you will need to know for making an actual modification! If you wish to learn more on the actual modding in practice, look at this thread. - https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/index.php?topic=3481.0

If there is anything, that you know and would like me to add to this page, please send me a PM, and I'll do so!

    Starting up: The Idea

It's very simple, every modification starts with the idea. As in, what will the mod be about? Will it be an historical setting? Or completely fantasy and randomness? Will it be Multiplayer? or Singleplayer? And then, which opportunities, and holdbacks will come look with an Historical accurate modification like for example the seven years war? or the perhaps even the American Civil war!, or a fantasy modification like something like Lord of the Rings? or Game of the Thrones??!

Well, a lot of people may think that it's really easy to just pick a random subject for their modification and start, and I've quit some people, perhaps even including myself, who picked a subject for their mod, but the job got impossible as soon as I/they started. So I could say it's really important that you make the right decision! You must be sure that you will enjoy the progress yourself, so starting by picking a suitable subject that is interesting you a lot is a step to the good direction! After all! You should have fun with modding, and creating your own masterpiece! Getting bored during the development get's you to easily quit the project, and of course you would disappoint your followers! As you most likely made a good bunch of people interested already who are desperate waiting for your modification to be released!

What is probably even more important, is that you are sure that you can actually work, and make a good bunch of progress yourself on your own modification, if you don't know anything about modding you probably shouldn't even be busy with creating a modification. Instead you should go learn the very basics of modding, and take your time. Instead of rushing things, rushing is never good. It's most likely boring to learn things, instead of starting a fancy thread, and then just hope something happens. But it doesn't work that way. And some people may think like that, but it truly isn't. Short said, be sure of your case.

Getting started! : Setting up a suitable, and effective Developer Team.

While the people who are starting on their own mod, want a quick team gathered, asking people they know, and hope that they can do something. It is important, as starter and head of the mod, that you take an effective, and suitable team for the job. And a search for experienced, and good modders will be needed. Who can help you with creating the modification as soon and good as possible. First of all, if you aren't it yourself. (Though it is recommended that you do know something about it) It is important that you have a good coder, who is well known with the Module System. (MS) Without a coder, you will not get anywhere. So that should be a first priority with gathering your team.

After that, you probably should first be looking for some experienced textures, and modelers. The best will be someone who can do it both. So they can start creating models and add textures to them for your mod! After all, you want to have new weaponry, uniforms/armory, helmets/hats etc! To create unique units for your mod. In all fairness, the pubbers and community are looking for fancy models, and units to play around with! All they want is to look awesome! And who can blame them?!

Also, not to forget! Animator's may not be the first thing you need. But to add more features to your mod, you might as well search for one! What is not better then a fancy animation to play around with in the mod!? Then you have the mappers, though everyone can make maps. It's not hard, and rather easy to learn it. Though you want quality, and creativity in the maps that are for your mod. So experienced mappers, who are good with creating scenes that give you quality, and area's for proper gameplay (creativity)! After all, this is where the players will go play on, and if the maps are poorly designed, and barely playable. Then the players will easily quit the game, or worse quit your mod! The maps may be therefor pretty important in the part to make your mod successful!

Now a point about the "Graphical designs" and "researchers". As you may see, a lot of mods have people in their actual developer team, while the only thing they do and can do is research - where are some point they will be out of work, and use the fancy title but though they are not adding any productive speed into the development of the mod. Actually you can research most likely just as good as the people you would think are useful to your team. Or make some fancy designs for the thread, (who the textures and maybe yourself can make just as good or even better!) Don't forget! Your team needs to be so effective as possible, to create quality work, and work fast. (as possible). Basically un-organised and huge developer teams don't work out.

Thread - Community - Promoting your modification!

The most important to promote your modification to the community. Is to have your own thread on the forum! Here you can share with the community what you've done. And how the mod is progressing, how you're idea is looking, how your development team is looking, and any credits! (If needed) It also can be a handy source for advice, suggestions, and idea's for your modification! Which can be fatal to create a successful modification. After all, they will be playing it, and it's better that you're sure that they will like it! Also the thread can be used a lot for promoting your modification! Getting people to take a look, and once it's done to download it! Nothing is more fun as a developer is to see people enjoying the work you've done! Though, it's really important for your thread that you be sure that there aren't coming any discussion, or off-topic spam that could ruïn your thread! After all it's your thread! So be sure to report anyone that is putting **** on your thread, before it's to late and half of your thread is full of spam!

Also! Other way's of promoting your mod is to create your own signatures! To use them on the forum and to spread the word! You could also create video's, and open a YouTube channel, just for your modification! Though be aware that you don't spam people, and keep it on a proper level of promoting. People should know about it, not hate it! In the end, just be creative!

    Open Source Project + Credits!

Open Source Project items, rather called OSP are to be found on the taleworlds forum Link. These items have been created by experienced modders within the warband community. And released them for everyone to be used in their own mods. These sources of material could be for really good use in your mod! And the quality will add a nice touch to your mod! It could be maps, scripts, codes, items and more that you could use to progress your mod. Though don't make an over use of this! Think about it that the qualities will be different and that it might not fit all as good to gather as you may think, and wish!

Though, with using these fancy materials. You might want to think about it to add credit to the actual creators of the items!? They obviously putted quite some time in the items to be used by other person. And to prevent any conflicts between the actually owner and developers is to just do give the creators credit on your mod thread-page. And show that you are 1. Using their work, and 2. Appreciate that they made it OSP. Overall, this can be very useful to get started with modifications. In matter of fact you could even create modifications just from OSP items! Just be sure to credit the original makers in any case!

    Hello guy's!

I'm in need of some historically research "help". I've started not to long ago with some American Civil war mod thing for Hoi3,
however I need to know as many as possible Generals, and ministers of that time of either the Union or the Confederates.

You can simply help me by posting the name and a portrait of a general or minister on this thread! So we can include them in.

However do note! I need the Generals of Divisions, Corps, or Armies!

The help would be really appreciated! :)

    Here an example,

North & South: First Manassas / Big Bethel (Map) - WIP
    « on: November 22, 2012, 09:52:43 pm »
The Battle of Big Bethel, also known as the Battle of Bethel Church or Great Bethel was one of the earliest land battles of the American Civil War (Civil War) after the surrender of Fort Sumter. The battle between Union Army and Confederate States Army forces on June 10, 1861 took place in Hampton and York County, Virginia, (near the present-day unincorporated community of Tabb). While small in comparison to the many larger, bloodier and more significant battles later in the war, the Battle of Big Bethel and all early Civil War military engagements attracted considerable notice, press coverage and exaggerated importance because of the newness of the war and the general feeling the war would be short.
