Market Garden was just one part of the liberation of the Netherlands.
The ones to blame here are the British commanders. They pretty much got info about the large German presence at Arnhem shoved right in their faces by the Dutch resistance, and completely ignored it.
In some weird ironic twist of history, in 1813, the Germans (the Prussians) actually took Arnhem by storm, together with much-important bridge over the river, killing most of the garrison and taking the rest prisoner; and this time, they were welcomed as liberators by the Dutch. PLOT TWISTS EHMAGERD.
