History
This unit had an unusual inception for an infantry regiment. In June 1685, less than a month after the defeat of the Monmouth Rebellion, it was formed out of two companies of Guards at the Tower of London.
Its first title was the Ordnance Regiment, reflecting the role for which it was created - to act as an escort to the Train of Artillery, the ancestor of the Royal Artillery. King James II also called it ‘Our Royal Regiment of Fusiliers’, making it the first ever regiment with the ‘Royal’ title.
Its first overseas deployments were to the Low Countries in 1689 and 1691, Ireland in 1690 and Spain in 1702, 1706 and 1709. In 1713 it began 60 years rotating between England, Ireland and the Mediterranean, including two long spells with the Gibraltar garrison. During this time, in 1747, it was made a standard line infantry regiment under the numeral 7.That year also saw it gain its fusilier title for the first time. Since its inception it had been armed with light flintlock fusils, rather than the heavier matchlock muskets used by the rest of the infantry. This made it the only English fusilier regiment to fight with fusils. Other regiments were granted the name as a purely honorary title. The regiment moved to Canada in 1773 but had to surrender to American revolutionaries two years later. Re-formed in New York in 1776 via prisoner exchanges, it fought on for the rest of the conflict. 1782 saw it lose its Colours at Cowpens and nominally become the county regiment for Derbyshire, though that title was never used.
In 1791, 1808, 1809 and 1815 it was again stationed in Canada, fighting in the New Orleans campaign of the War of 1812 (1812-15). Its other early 19th century postings included Copenhagen and the West Indies. A 2nd Battalion was formed in 1804 and served alongside 1st Battalion in the Peninsula from 1809 to 1811. Both fought at Albuera (1811) after a 20-mile night march.
