Well it is a disputed one, I've read it in some Napoleonic fiction but also heard that Queen Vic invented it because she wanted more men with stripes on their arms....

But it did certainly exist at some point in the 19th century,I choose to believe it existed during the NW because it's a good ol' rank to have.
