Fort Wagner
« on: September 11, 2015, 06:02:41 am »
hi i'm sethja and i make maps

i'm not great at mapmaking, and i'd like some constructive criticism for this map (i'm not great with the history of wagner and i can't find much on it) tho keep in mind i'd like to have a balanced map over accurate map

i decided to work a little bit on a fort wagner map a while ago but i didn't like it because it was made near-fully of logs.

recently, i came and replaced the logs (by adding to them) with dirt (since fort wagner was made of sand and dirt supported by logs)

i've only worked on the fort (props and a little bit of terrain work) but link 3 will be used later to put down flora if i decide to finish this.

oh, speaking of which, ignore the floating cannons ::) post-log rework i had to move them and up was the easiest way

there are still bits and pieces which aren't done terrain or prop wise in case you see the generic "there's an X missing here"

one problem i have with it personally is the look of the dirt blocks (the walls).  i might be able to fix it with micro-prop-managing

Here's a "battleplan" that shows where attackers can enter the fort and how I hope the siege progresses.
LBlue = Defenders :: Orange = Attackers :: Red/Green on walls signify if climbable or not.

specifically i'd like :
-structure criticism or history-buffs telling me what i did wrong (the wooden buildings in the structure are more for balance so the defenders have something hard to sit behind)
-terrain criticism
-any other comments, really.  i don't need any playtesting (yet) since there are no possible "bugs" until i want to break the scenic for the siege

since it's so 'early' in development i can take a hit.  if something is seriously bothering you, feel free to send a suggestion.  ;)

I commend you for making this highly requested map. I am not a mapper by any league than simply testing new props in Edit mode. Good luck with this map :)

To Glory !

Aye, a beach background would be more fitting of the outer terrain borders.

If you like, I would be willing to help. I wish it were possible for 2 people to edit a map at the same time on a server but sadly I don't believe it is.. I guess my credentials would be Hampton Roads/Shenandoah Valley in the last 1.0 and the updated Alamo siege map thats out there.

@Arkansan, if you want to help out feel free to add me on steam "Sethja8" and we can discuss co-operative mapmaking  8)

made a few minor edits.   ;)  sorry for the fairly late update, i just haven't gotten around to map-making in a while.  spent an hour or two on this the other night.

Overview of the updated map, including time difference.  Not sure what time I want, may make two variants.  Historically the attack was at 8:00 PM I believe?

I made the landscape of the dip more severe and put water at the bottom.  I added stakes to give the attackers obstacles but also cover.
[close]
Put in this little trench area and a few deployable ladders so the defenders can sally out and the attackers can climb ladders if they want to.
[close]
Added a trench and changed some landscape here to benefit the defenders if they lose the walls.
[close]
Right next to the "cap square" I put this trench to benefit the defenders.  Gives a strong-yet-weak second line.
[close]
View of the right side of the fort from an infantryman's perspective in the ''mini-river''
[close]
I put a few discouraging spikes in the walls to stop the attackers from storming up them too quick.  So far, these spikes are only located here.  May put them around the wall more.

I feel like the fort had a much greater sand content considering it was on a beach head. Period drawings and paintings show this as well.

The sand in NAS is dry crackly desert.  It will likely be retextured next update, and I'll put it in there then.
