Sir John Moore assumed command of the British Army in October 1808 and led it across Portugal and Spain to link up with his Spanish allies, commencing a campaign against his better wishes. At much the same time Napoleon arrived in the Peninsula at the head of 125,000 men, all battle hardened veterans from Austerlitz, Jena and Eylau. Having restored his brother back on the Spanish throne, Napoleon now turns his attention to destroy Moore’s army. With his lines of communication compromised and against heavy odds, Moore is forced to retreat in the dead of winter over the inhospitable Galician mountains - his army fighting tenacious rear-guard actions to facilitate their escape to the coast. This campaign still represents one of the harshest ordeals endured and survived by any British Army to date.

One sergeant of the 43rd Regiment - William Newman rallies two companies and fights a superb rear-guard action, each company first retiring and then about-facing to cover the other's retreat.
