History
Commanders:
1805-1807
1808-1812
1812
1815

Maréchal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte
Maréchal Claude Victor-Perrin
Maréchal Louis Nicolas Davout
Général Jean-Baptiste Drouet d'Erlon

The 1st Army Corps was formed 1805 in Boulogne-sur-Mer for the planned invasion of the british isles. But the british victory over the french fleet at Cape Finisterre destroyed Napoleon's plans. In late summer 1805 Bernadotte's 1st Corps got ordered to march to the Main river in Germany. He occupied Munich on the 12 October in the back of the austrian army under Karl Mack von Leiberich (who was defeated by Napoleon on 19 October at Ulm). The way to Vienna was now free for the Grande Armée. On 2 December 1805 the 1st Corps took part in Napoleon's most glorious victory: Austerlitz. Bernadotte commanded the left wing of the french center and after the battle he got honored by the Empereur with the title of a Prince of Pontecorvo. At the twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt (14 October 1806) the 1st corps was on the march between the two battlefields towards the city of Halle and occupied it. The 1st Corps took the bridge over the Saale river and later Napoleon compared this charge with his own at Lodi (1796). At the battle of Mohrungen on 25 January 1807 Bernadotte's 1st corps was victorious but his supply train got raid by russian cavalry and forced him to call of the attack, so that his 1st Corps was at the Battle of Eylau too far away to take part (7-8 February 1807). In late 1808 Claude Victor-Perrin was awarded the command over the 1st Corps, and Napoleon send him to the iberian peninsular to fight the spanish rebellion and the british forces. The 1st Corps played an important role at the battles of Espinosa, Talavera, Barrosa and Cádiz. In 1812 the 1st Corps was ordered to march to the russian borders were Louis-Nicolas Davout took over command. On the 15 June 1812 the official ammount of men was 66 345. The French invasion of Russia had begun. With 79,000 men in the 1st Corps - the biggest one ever formed in the History of the 1er Empire - Davout defeated the russians at Mohilev before he met the Grande Armée under Napoleon. On 7 September 1812 the 1st Corps saw action at the Battle of Borodino. At the Shevardino redoubt the 1st Corps was supporting Joachim Murat's attack. This unexpected French advance and the fall of the Shevardino redoubt threw the Russian formation into disarray. During the following attack at the Bagration flèches, Davout was personally leading the 57th Line Regiment (Le Terrible) and was wounded and reported as dead. But he kept on leading the 57th and conquered the flèches. The russian general Bagration retook it until Michel Ney claimed it for the french forces again. After the retreat from Moscow, at the Battles of Vyazma (3 November) and Krasnoi (15-18 November) the shrunken 1st Corps under Davout was defeated by the russian army. The last action saw the 1st Corps at the Battle of Berezina (26-29 November 1812). On the 8 January 1813 the official numbers said that 3019 men were left of the Ier corps. For the Hundred Days the Ier Corps was reformed under the command of Général Drouet d'Erlon.
