Developer Blog 19 - Guns n Stuff

Click here for a graphically more pleasing version!

Attention on deck! After last week’s exciting announcement of the long awaited NW “naval” patch, we promised some more BCoF news.

So here we are! Again we apologise for the wait between information, but this has actually been a really good sign. As for the most part we are developing and paying for this from our own time with your generous donations (and what work we send Vincenzo to do on the streets, nuff said there...) it is very easy to lapse into a productive cyber hibernation wherein we churn out lots of work but forget there is a world outside the cold precise corners of our desktops. We have actually made significant progress and are so close to the very first in-house prototype playtesting that all of us over here are beginning to get the “we are actually doing this” giddy feeling you get before the server crashes and the bug-squashing begins. While we are still a fair distance away from showing gameplay, we do have some more pretties to show you all, so please do not let me waste any more time with my mindless dribble and nonsense and lower your eyes to the lines below wherein you will probably enjoy the media stuff we have on show. Well done if you didn’t skip ahead, you may do so now.

Behold the Union Drummer! Apparently if they played fast enough and there were enough of them, they could play really loudly! Fact: 70% of the Union victories during the war can be attributed solely to the Confederates unexplainable fear of the drumming. Fact: 99% of statistics on the internet are made up on the spot.

Behold the Union snob Officer. For those who like to be bossy. And, you know, win battles.

Now while you are all voraciously guzzling up our eye candy, why not stir your sound sensors with our stomach turning, heartwarming rendition of “Battle Cry of Freedom” Drummer style!

And if that is not enough, imagine our great heroes wielding the mighty Spencer Rifle. While it was issued to various Union formations (originally the US Navy and cavalry) the poor confederates found that getting their hands on one was one hell of a difficult enterprise! If you’ve a mind to, you could kill a whole damn lot of enemies with this semi-automatic nightmare, as records show that if used correctly you can fire up to 20 rounds per minute using this beauty, but watch yourself as this particular monster isn’t exactly the model of health and safety... (Not that instruments of death ever have the best record in this regard).

Once again we have to offer our sincerest gratitude, without your support we could not make this game and so we owe it to you to make this the best damn experience you are ever going to play! (Until we make our next game of course).

Thanks for reading.

I think we already posted that in the Donator Board. But now everyone can get it!

Also, fully functioning Spencer:

Aye, a list of the units that will be in the game would be nice.

Otherwise, amazing work. FSE has got to be one of the hardest working indie devs I've seen in a long time.

Delicious, is all I can say! Impressive graphical detail on all of the weapons so far, and animations on the guns brings even more deliciousness to the table.
One wish that would make this the most delirious thing ever in a video game would be to see a reloading stick in the reloading animation.

Fantastic as always, I think I'm getting lazy with saying that, because things are always impressive here.

Q: Will drumming animations be as they are in NW? Or will the drummers actually have drumming animations for the songs they're playing?
Title: Re: Developer Blog 19 - Guns n Stuff -
Post by: Olafson on August 02, 2013, 02:46:17 am
Drumming animations for the actual song they are playing are way to hard to reproduce.

So about the same as NW then?
On another note I'm a bit worried since I can't really find that many bigger games made in Unity or games with a multiplayer focus.
Are you guys using the new Unity 4 or Unity 3 by the way?

I've actually been wondering something, could you guys try and make a uniform degrading system? Like as a a battle goes on, mud splatters start appearing on the brogans and lower level of the sack coat, along on the trouser leggings. When you get shot, a bullet hole appears where you got shot within the blood-splatter.

Also some uniform fraying would be nice, and before someone tells me, this is all speculation. I understand that these guys can't give us the world here. It's just on many skins now-a-days I've been seeing these small texture additions, I was wondering if they could become... dynamic.

Looks good boys but please don't forget the officer's canteen. it may look like an over amount of gear but it is the most essential part historically. also the Canteen and haversack is to be worn High on the hip as to not slap your backside in a quick paced movement.  Good job and keep up the great work!  8)

Looking fantastic, i'v been keeping up to date with all your updates since day one and am really impressed.
I feel for ya about how stingy the donations are and applaud you on continuing development, saying that i also think you should make a kickstarter, it really has a way of loosening peoples wallets.

I'll continue to spread the word and hopefully gain more followers as this is one of the only projects i anticipate what with the gaming industry in the state it is.

Quick Question: Will the finished game/post release have Cavalry? I'm guessing so considering the new rifle, also how do you think these fast shooting rifles will affect gameplay, could the only way to balance them be making em' horribly inaccurate?

Unique uniforms for the next blog please;) Like highlanders or some obscure uniform.

I doubt there will be any obscure uniforms for some time for the following reasons:

FSE is attempting to get all the basic assets done for its playable Alpha thus the next likely uniforms will be the equivalents for the South while I am guessing a series of facial textures will also have to be created  (unless purchased). My guess would be:

-Union Fifer uniform (if needed).
-Southern ranker
-Southern Officer
-Southern Drummer/Fife

They will at least need those to implement the standard features into the alpha ie: Officer/Ranker/musician and get the core mechanics working while at the same time providing assets for team based games and team mode coding.

The way I understand it is to begin with there will not be specific regiments, and specialty regiments will be added over time.

They are going to start with generic rankers, officers, and specialty classes or least that's what I've understood from the dev blogs.

This is what I got from them too. You have your basic line regiments, cavalry regiments, and artillery batteries. Of course, with Commanders as well. I'm sure they'll add regiments later on like the 33rd Virgina, 14th Brooklyn Militia, Washington Light Battery, 69th New York, 26th North Carolina, etc... etc... etc...

What similarities if at all are there to Napoleonic Wars?  Is there a new ground up shooting and melee engine?

From what I've seen, it seems like a RO2/Arma/Warband mix

Of course it's all new. It's a different engine.

99 posts not many? It's an average number, it's around the same as some other dev blogs which have been on for far longer. Some dev blogs are more interesting then others. That's common logic. :)

I heard that the spencer rifle took two people to reload and ammo was fed into the butt.

(https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2F9%2F9e%2FSpencer_rifle_diagram.png&hash=f047a90bb7524a02696230624390b5b4f605f52e)

How will this work in game when people mostly don't aim for 110% historical accuracy?

What I mean is, historical accuracy is grand and all but we won't be able to portray it in that complexity. Will it just act like the Spencer Rifle in North and South?

We have added a reload animation specially for the spencer, to unscrew the bulletcover in the back, put in the bullets one by one and put it all back together again.

What weaponry do you plan on giving the CS cav seeing that the Union has spencers?

Spencers could have some downsides, ie: limited ammo and makes a lot of smoke when fired:

The Spencer showed itself to be very reliable under combat conditions, with a sustainable rate-of-fire in excess of 20 rounds per minute. Compared to standard muzzle-loaders, with a rate of fire of 2–3 rounds per minute, this represented a significant tactical advantage.[10] However, effective tactics had yet to be developed to take advantage of the higher rate of fire. Similarly, the supply chain was not equipped to carry the extra ammunition. Detractors would also complain that the amount of smoke produced was such that it was hard to see the enemy.[11]

Not sure what the devs will choose as a comparable weapon but the southern cavalry may have used pistols quite a bit afaik:

Pistols, which Southern cavalrymen generally preferred over sabers, were usually six-shot revolvers, in .36- or .44-caliber, from Colt or Remington. They were useful only in close fighting since they had little accuracy. It was common for cavalrymen to carry two revolvers, for extra firepower, and John Mosby's troopers often carried four each.

Possibly the Union having a Spencer and saber against CS cav with an Enfield Carbine, saber and pistol. Would be difficult to balance but im sure the devs got this.

Can we duel wield a revolver and saber?

EDIT:
Why did they have multiple revolvers when they could just have several cases instead (the cylinder that carried the rounds)?

Meh... Please no duel wielding.

And I guess they had several due to being able to fire more rapidly. Revolver barrel changes take time. On some you cant even do it.

So how will we load the revolvers in game then? Changing barrels? Would take ages to actually reload each shot. It's like loading a musket six times.

You exaggerate, but that's pretty much how most revolvers were reloaded at the time. Any way, once reloaded, you can make 6 rapid shots and that's a lot.

Loading the 1861 Colt is a pain in the ass. The caps are small as hell. I could imagine guys in RL battles fumbling over those all the time.

Musket is actually faster than the non metallic cartridges but I'm sure they will figure out a way to make it accessible. Probably just increase the speed like they did for NW pistols.

Hi Milly  :-*. I sent you a pm.

Didn't they (Cav) actually carried 2-3 loaded revolver in order to not get forced to reload in battle?

Assuming that every cavarlyman somehow could afford that. It's more likely they had a couple of different barrels, but even that is far-stretched. Some of these self-proclaimed cavarlymen even carried hunting rifles and shotguns, especially in the beginning of the war.
