Sumy hussar regiment was formed in 1796 from the same easily horse regiment, who led his story from the Sloboda Cossack regiments.
In 1812 8 active squadrons of the Sumy hussars were the 1st Western army in the 6th infantry corps of General D. S. Dokhturov, 2 spare squadron was in the 2nd reserve corps Lieutenant-General F. F. Ertel in the city of Mozyr.
In 1812, chief of the regiment was major-General count P. P. von der Palen, regimental commander — N.. Kanalov. In a rear-guard action at Vitebsk on 15 July 1812 Kanalov was wounded in his head-and handed over the command to Colonel D. A. Delyanov.
After the invasion of Napoleon's army in Russia, the regiment in heavy rear-guard battle covered the retreat of the main forces of the army from the border to the Borodino field, having distinguished himself in defensive battles under the Red, Borisov, Mozhaisk, under Ostrovno and Depth.
