Regiments / 20th 'East Devonshire' Regiment of Foot - "The Two-Tens" - [NA]
« on: March 07, 2016, 10:06:06 pm »Originally raised in 1688 as Peyton's Regiment of Foot (After Colonel Richard Petyon), the regiment participated in the Glorious revolution on the side of William II, aiding his overthrow of the then king James II. The regiment then went on to serve in the War of Spanish Succession, where it distinguished itself in multiple battles against the Kingdom of France (Notably the battles of Dettingen and Fontenoy).
In 1751, the regiment was Christened the 20th, earning it's nickname the 'Two Tens'. It continued to serve the British crown through the Seven Years War, earning an honor at the Battle of Minden where they held their ground and single-handedly dispersed a French Cavalry charge.
In 1782, the Regiment was designated the 'East Devonshire', and went on to serve in the Napoleonic Wars. The Twentieth participated in the Egyptian Campaign, and in the battle of Alexandria. However, they shined in the Peninsula, earning recognition for their actions in the Battle of Vitoria where the Duke of Wellington called them part of the 'Backbone' of his forces. The East Devonshire was not present at Napoleon's last stand at Waterloo, however they did later find service in the Crimean War at the battles of Alma and Inkerman in 1854.
However, in 1881 with the Childers Reforms, the regiment was merged with other battalions to become the 'Lancashire Fusiliers'.
Battle Honors (Austrian Sucession through South Africa): Dettingen, Minden, Egmont-op-Zee, Egypt, Maida, Vimiera, Corunna, Vitoria, Pyrenees, Orthes, Toulouse, Peninsula, Alma, Inkerman, Sevastopol, Lucknow, Khartoum, Relief of Ladysmith, South Africa 1899-1902
