WAR DECLARED!

North Korea says it has entered a state of war against South Korea.

"From this time on, the North-South relations will be entering the state of war and all issues raised between the North and the South will be handled accordingly," a statement carried by the North's official KCNA news agency said.

(KCNA) released a statement saying the U.S. stealth bomber flights over South Korea Thursday are an “unacceptable” provocation, and it is giving a “final warning” to U.S.

[KCNA] cited an emergency military meeting convened by leader Kim Jong-un on Thursday in which he reportedly approved plans for striking U.S. and South Korean targets.
Kim's "important decision" is an ultimatum to "hostile forces" and a final decision for justice, added the statement.
But the North stopped short of launching an actual attack immediately, saying its military is waiting for a final order by Kim.

This is a result of stressful war games that have been played due to UN sanctions slamming down on North Korea due to their underground nuclear tests. North Korea refused to stop researching for a nuclear weapon, Following this they started boasting their strength.

Threats went back and forth between them and the USA. With both sides flexing their military muscles.
About a week before this declaration, The USA & South Korea organized a joint military exercise which  North Korea said is "An open declaration of war", which they then threatened that their weapons are pointed at US Nuclear submarines & B-14 bombers stationed in Japan & the Korean sea.

Part of this conflict also included threats from North Korea of Nuclear strikes on South Korea & the publication of a NK Propaganda film depicting war, and an attack on the US (Badly animated), where they showed a clip of the White House in flames.

Technically, they were already still at war...

I honestly don't see what they're looking to get out of this. There's no way they'll actually start a hot war with the South if the U.S. is assisting them, and absolutely no chance in hell that China's gonna come to their aid. Kim Jong-un's really running out of threats to make.

They nullified the armistice, which was done before for no good reason. Basically no war has been declared but the tensions seem to be up there. Who the hell told you that war broke out?

I don't think anyone said it's actually broken out, just that the North has "entered a state of war" with the South. Whatever that means. :P

Yeah this thread is bullshit.

No it's not.

Hacking group Anonymous_Korea claimed they have taken down five of North Korea's official websites, including the country's official web portal and the foreign relations committee's site.

The hacktivist group Anonymous_Korea published a list of the five government websites they claimed to have put out of action on their Twitter feed under the hash tag 'Tangodown.'

The group later tweeted the attack was still under way, but they had not managed to bring down The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s site.

Pyongyang stepped up its warmongering rhetoric on Friday night and declared it was “entering a state of war” with its southern neighbor.

“From this time on, the North-South relations will be entering the state of war and all issues raised between the North and the South will be handled accordingly,” a special statement by the country’s top military command reads, according to the KCNA state news agency.

Just because they were 'technically' at a state of war, doesn't mean that because they decided to nullify their ceasefire that they won't engage.
This could very much develop to a real and bloody war.

Tensions in the area have been developing for quite some time now, I don't think the south Koreans & Americans are going to step down, nor the North Koreans giving in.

Even if there won't be an armed confrontation, something big must happen. When did at any point in history has a nation pretended to be aggressive, only to agree to stop?
We doubt that the North Koreans are capable of confronting the US with their weapons, but there's nothing to prove that they won't be crazy enough to wage war anyways.

Ehh, seems much more like their typical saber rattling to me...

Quote
First, North and South Korea have technically been at a state of war since the Korean War began six decades ago. So, while this “declaration of war” certainly sounds scary, the rhetoric alone does not change anything substantial.
Quote
Second, North Korea does not appear to have taken many concrete steps toward actual war. There have been no reports, for example, of the country massing its troops along the border. War is a big, complicated logistical undertaking, especially when you’re a particularly poor country trying to shuffle 1.1. million troops into place. They’re not exactly a lightening-response force.
Quote
And, third, the Kaesong Industrial Complex, a large facility staffed by South and North Korean workers just on the northern side of the border, is still running smoothly, according to Reuters. As I wrote earlier, the fact that North Korea is bothering to keep Kaesong open suggests that it does not think war will actually break out, which would seem to bolster skepticism about whether or not it has any intention of following through on its war threats.

So, Suppose NK wouldn't actually attack, what comes next?
Just slam more trade sanctions on NK? Or would the USA insist on military action in order to stop their nuclear program?

Quote
7:40 GMT: North Korean rocket units are reportedly on standby to fire on US bases in the South Pacific. Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and Austin, Texas, are singled out as main targets on a map clearly visible in the background of a photo of a gathering of North Korean military leaders. However, international experts say it is doubtful that North Korean missiles could reach any of those targets.

after the new government in china, north korea has no ally. Maybe they see the end coming and try to keep their power for some time by making war.

North Korea has no power they're in an extremely fragile position, everyone who lives in North Korea is extremely poor and live with horrible standards of living, the government is debt due to such a large amount of money going to their military. The only thing from stopping a revolution in North Korea is the brutal military crack down on anyone who steps out of line.

First of all NK never technically stopped being at war with SK, and this isn't the first time they declared the armistice invalid. The only reason this is occurring is because the UN placed higher sanctions on NK after they threatened to proceed with nuclear testing. Which honestly isn't much of a surprise since we knew they had nuclear weapons already. You have to remember that since China actually backed the last round of sanctions against NK they arent in a position to do much other than spout their mouths off. The have literally one card they can play to try and force the UN to lower sanctions and that is threatening all out nuclear war. Which is what they've been doing. However that does not mean for a moment that they would actually do it. Particularly now that its much less likely that China would waste any more time over them. North Korea's higher ups actually live pretty comfortably and are pretty aware of their situation. The absolute last thing they would do would be to throw away their status by becoming needlessly involved in what would be a devastating war on both sides. Not to mention their population is in no condition to start a war. As I stated earlier, this is only posturing to try and force the UN into backing down on their sanctions. Also, don't get your news from RT, they sensationalize literally everything they get their hands on and those big ass banners saying "breaking" and images of North Korean troops marching only serve to make you look like you're pushing an agenda.

That said, i've always been one to love me some wargames so lets look at what would actually go down if Best Korea actually invaded the south. I found this post from reddit answering how we would counter the north's blitz into south korea to be pretty interesting:
Quote
This is from my Social Studies teacher, who was a Marine Colonel stationed in SK during the 80's. He assumed not much has changed.
We plan to lose most of South Korea. If NK attacks, the US forces are to immediately fall back and form a defensive perimeter around Pusan, just like in the first war. NK has too many artillery pieces near the border to put up an effective defense there, plus the hope was that by not putting up a fight near Seoul, they could minimize the shelling and civilian casualties. From there US planes based in Japan, Pusan and the nearby carrier group can begin picking off NK artillery, destroying enemy armor and hitting infantry columns. Within a few hours additional marines can be onsite from the carrier group, within 12 they can be there from Japan, and within 48 they can be there from Hawaii.
As long as Pusan holds, the marines should be able to launch their counter offensive by day 3. The Army should arrive by day 5 including an amphibious landing at Inchon if necessary. By day 10 its planned that US troops would be in Pyongyang.
tl;dr Our defense against the blitz is too not be anywhere near the blitz, then force them to concentrate into a small area, limiting the speed and amount of forces they can use before reinforcing and striking back.

Granted this is a plan from the 80's but the only thing that would really change is that our airforce is like a million times more effective now so it would really just take less time to actually neutralize any threat. And before anyone says it, no NK will not nuke SK. If there is a single principle that both the north and south believe in it is the desire to one day reunite korea. Its not typically a good play to nuke the territories you are trying to conquer. If they did nuke anybody it would be the United States but the fact is that they don't have anything even remotely reliable enough to pull that off. Nor do they have the range capabilities to even hit hawaii, nevermind the mainland.

Also, I would recommend you read the declaration yourself. You can find a copy of it here: http://live.reuters.com/Event/North_Korea/70001409

TL;DR

And just to clarify; Those "military-exercises" were not a one time thing. They're a regular occurrence.
