Maybe for a French hussar, but Dutch hussars are less dandy and more soldier-y.

You're lucky I don't have much on the Dutch Hussars, only account I've read is a short journal entry from 1799 that says "they were remarkably fine fellows, indifferently mounted but otherwise most completely equipped,"

Next you'll be telling me they didn't even have pipes.

According to some French guys Dutch hussars (and cavalry in general) were good soldiers and took better care of their horses then the French (Though it's kinda impossible to take worse care of your horse then the French did) , but they lacked the 'mad' spirit of the hussars. They also lacked any sign of enthusiasm to serve Napoleon.

That makes sense. The Dutch Hussars in Lieutenant Hunt's journal were deserting to the British, with news that the rest of their regiment would probably join them.

The French promptly moved said regiment to the rear.

1799, I can't find many details on the campaign outside my book, which only covers the 7th Light Dragoons, on short notice, but it seems to be an attempt by Britain and Russia to 'liberate' the Netherlands.

They didn't really manage. I assume you'll have more on the actual campaign than I.

A high French officer that died in that campaign is buried in the church of the city I live near. There's even a gravestone caved in the middle of a small church plaza.

1799 was a confusing time. In short, we were fed up with everybody invading our country, and we had realized by now that the French brought no improvement. I'm not surprised some people deserted, but their news that the entire regiment was considering deserting might be overestimated. At worse, they all wanted to stop fighting. At the other hand, the hussars had plenty of 'orangists' in it, so it isn't totally unlikely.

the 1799 campaign was a DISASTER for the Dutch (or batavian) army. And the navy..., God, they deserted to the Prince(William I) en masse. They (the captains) were actually told the ships would be considered an Dutch navy under command of the Prince - But they simply became prices of war anyway. I'm convinced we'd been butchered if the French hadn't come along. Not that I'm that knowledgeable on it anyway. I only know that when we were finally winning, we let them all go.
