You guys won't like this.
I come back and poke on the forums every month maybe just to see how it's going, and see if there is any new devblogs. There never is.....But that's not the point. I'm here and I'm on a rant.
/startrant

Hi everyone, I'm Hugo and I'm a teamaholic.

I regret every second. A lot of you guys say that you've "met cool people" or "learned things" but the reality is this is a game, and there is next to nothing to actually be learned. And you haven't really met anyone. The best skill that can be achieved from playing this game is having the ability to administer/babysit children on the internet.

The game itself isn't even fun. It's aggravating, time consuming, and filled with douchebags. It's the community, the politics involved, and the people you play with that make it addicting. The time period is interesting and it's the only one of its kind. And that what makes the game seem to be worth while. But read my lips! IT'S A WAIST OF TIME!

To play as a ranker in this game is to sacrifice X hours of your life every week. Only to impress internet people. Your rank only signifies how well you function in an internet community. If you're a Sgt in the xxth no one cares. No one ever will. Even if you actually meet someone from the game IRL they still really don't care.  No one really does. You're all lying to yourselves about how it really isn't a waiste of time because you're all to scared of life. To go out and actually experience it. And I'm guilty of the same crime. At least I was.

As a officer/reg leader you learn how to babysit. And I saw Karth's post about the air force. If you think leading a regiment will help you in the military your world is upside down. Especially an officer in it. ESPECIALLY A PILOT! Leading/being a CO in a regiment takes a tremendous amount of time, dedication, and hard work. Now. think if you took all that power, all that drive and put it towards something real. Anything real. I don't care and neither does anyone in this community. Some people may think that what you're doing in life is interesting, and maybe you have some friends on here that you feel are real friends. Let me tell you something about them. They are real friends. But they're not REAL. Yeah, they're a real person on the other side of a keyboard. But they're not really there for you. They can't really help you, all they can do for you is play games with you. And what really is a game?  A game is an activity engaged in for diversion or amusement. Diversion. Diversion from what? REAL LIFE. The sooner you guys realize this the better. And karth. If you are serious about joining the AF, I preemptively thank you for serving. Not now but if you do(it's hard to be a officer nowadays with the peacetime and such).

Now some of you guys (a lot) of you guys are still in HS, Middle school, and I know they're are some 12thyearolds too(I had to!). And I urge you guys to not get swept into this diversion. If I could relive my life I would have never bought the game. In HS and below you guys haven't started life yet. There is not a whole lot that can really be done above and beyond. But let me carry on that point. You could. You could do almost anything else outside of this game in HS. Even drugs. And I'm not advocating drugs, but at least it's a real experience. But my point is this game is an utter waist of energy, life, and thousands upon thousands of player hours. Don't do drugs. Do something constructive. Like join 4H. or boyscouts, the list goes on. Just stop playing the game.

So for me personally I was addicted as one can be to this game. Line battles gave me a euphoric rush. And I told myself that it's what I enjoy(I did, and I still would) and I'd do it forever. And I was sincerely intending to do so. I told myself "eh, It'll keep me out of drugs." but playing this game didn't even stop that. Another really interesting thing, that I've heard time and time again from players is "I'd go hand out with my friends but nothing is ever going on." That's a lie a lot of us tell to ourselves. We all have friends. Not all of us, but most of us(I'm talking real life here). I would pull this card. You pull this card. We all do. But the brutal reality is that we all are/were letting life, and our friends pass us by. Sometimes you have to pick up the phone and make some plans. sometimes you have to leave the computer off and see what's actually going on in the world. Once I realized this stuff it hurt. It's not easy, nor fun to actually partake in real life. It's hard. But that's the problem we have as gamers. We don't want to grow up. But I urge you to do so.

This game was my addiction and I successfully kicked it to the curb. Doing so free'd up so much of my time.  Since the 29th disbanded I've lost 54 pounds. Gained some real life life long friends, and had a lot more time, energy and dedication to actually think about my life and how to further my self in this world. For me I was addicted to the team. Being on a team meant a lot to me, and still does. I had lost interest in the game long before the 29th disbanded. But it was the feeling of being on a team, and not letting internet people down is what brought me back time and time again. And a lot of you may never be able to shake that feeling. For you reg leaders: it only gets harder to disband. Never easier. You'll never outgrow it. You just have to say I'm done. And then a couple months down the road you'll realize how much of an idiot you were(for playing).

One thing I would like to urge is if you find yourselves addicted to the team atmosphere go join the military. Karth knows what's up. Even though his world is a little upside down. And I still can't shake the team mentality. And I never will. So I've joined the Army as a Medic and I intend to do that for as long as I can.

Most of you guys are good people and I hope you become successful in life. I'm just trying to help out in any way that I can and I hope this cleared up some things for you.

So what have we learned?
-You learn how to be in an internet clan
-all the time and effort you put into learning how to be in an internet clan has got you no where in real life, now you're 250 pounds, eat hot pockets for breakfast, lunch, and supper, and lie to yourself about achieving a meaningless title in an internet clan that means nothing in real life. But hey, you're having fun.
-No friends
-No time
I'm going to leave you guys with this and if there is a god. I hope you guys take heed to my words. Thanks for reading.

If a game has led to your soical life suffering, you need to look at yourself.

+1

But on a more serious note, I maange to have really good friends in real life and still play the game FOR FUN. If it's taken over your flide then you do reall have problems. Also some of the people I have met have actually became really good friends and I actually know some IRL, so maybe you are just shit at socialising?

To be honest you wrting that whole massive post about not playing the game is quite a lot of hypcracy, just to think you are telling people not to waste their time when it probably took you hours to write that whole post.

and finally its waste* not waist

You guys entirely missed the point of what Hugo said. It's not don't play and enjoy the game, it's don't let the game basically take over your life.

I can understand what he said too. That feeling of not wanting to let your "team" down even at personal expense. I'd be lying if I said that feeling hasn't cost me quite a bit myself. Still don't regret owning NW though.

Ye I agree with Hugo, could of done more stuff socially over the years than NW and other games, but I still have fun playing it. And yes I do have "friends" online and ye there not there psychically but just like me they are there to chill and have a good time playing a game. I think if I had 0 friends irl that would be a bit fucked up, but I don't, so its aight. Hi Hugo long time no see m9.

Oh dear... This truly will become NW Anonymous. Seriously though. If you let it take over your life its your fault and not the game. If you can't manage time and set priorities straight then this happens. So really, just manage the time and set priorities. I never had that "can't let the team down" because I knew what my priorities were, I understood what games were. I lived my life during NW years and hell I even learned new things like Modding and organizing myself with teams when it came to modding as well how to manage time. (Modelling, texturing, animation etc). I stayed with millander and the crew because they were fun to be around with when no one was at home (which is most of the time with one parent being a CEO and the other a General Manager). I obviously have irl friends and I never replaced them with those that weren't around me IRL. But anyways. Just manage your time wisely and set your priorities. Games are just for fun and for entertainment. Not your life (I'm looking at you competitors).
The first modder for NW.

Cool story bro.

Like seriously, it would be ridiculous if I said Jorge and Clemett and Jay and Drumb and Oolong and Sean and Kelly and Alcaro and Brock and Jaykro and Jimmies all of those other 8th members throughout the years weren't my friends (Especially Jorge). It sucks being the oldest sibling, especially when you don't really have anyone to look up to, since my father was always busy away at work. Jorge has been like an older brother to me, he's taught me me to be a far more outgoing and charismatic person than I was at the end of my Freshman year of high school.

Setting up forum pages for events and the 8th, that design aspect actually helps me with the volunteer work I do at a local museum (making fliers and setting up events). Working towards a common goal and having to compromise with others and actually work with them is actually a really valuable life lesson and skill to be learned. But for you to tell others that their experience has no meaning is both you sitting on a high horse, and trying to project your own personal feelings onto others experiences which is rude and ridiculous.

I've got a story to tell myself

It was August 2011 and I was going into my Sophmore year of High School. I had gone with my father to New York City to visit for a week, as he works there and has an apartment there for when he works. For the first few days he actually had to work before we could go around town, so I was on Steam on his laptop in his apartment looking at demos. That's when I discovered Mount and Blade, I played the demo of that a lot in my spare time when my dad was at work. I started looking into mods for the games, and lo and behold there was MM. I was (and still am) a fairly large fan of the Napoleonic Wars. It was like a dream come true, a game where I could line up like they really did and actually be part of that sort of action, and not just command it like in Total War.

When I got home the next week, I bought the complete pack. Installed MM, and within my first 15 or so minutes of playing that I was a member of the 8th. Jorge was asking if anyone wanted to be in a linebattle, and it took him a few maps to notice that I was actually responding. He walked me through setting up Teampseak and joining the server they were on. I've been with the 8th since that day: August 26th, 2011. I was in my first linebattle that night, and I knew then I had truly found something special.

I kept with the 8th throughout the rest of High School, and while my grades did drop a bit in my sophmore year, it wasn't related to the game at all. When I procrastinate, I don't play video games. Video Games are the one thing I make sure not to touch when procrastinating, dunno why, that's just how I've always been.

In the end though, I ended up graduating with like a 3.2 GPA. Not bad, got into a nice college to boot (And have made even more friends in College, and still with the 8th!). Oh yeah, I also Fenced too, while also still doing Linebattles and playing other games, and had plenty of IRL friends who I hung out with.

Fun story about Jimmies who I had mentioned earlier: He went to a Military School for a little while (we wrote each other letters while he was there), and guess what helped him out there? Some of the stuff he had done in NW. He got to be color guard because they didn't have to teach him the commands (Right Face, Left Face, all that sort of thing). Some aspects of this leak into real life, no matter how much you want to deny it Hugonaugt. May not have been an instant ticket to succeeding in life, but it helped him.

I wouldn't, and I won't, give up these 3 1/2 years with the 8th for anything. Some of the best damn people I've met. Some of the best damn people I've had the pleasure to call my friends.
The 8th is not dead! Proud Colonel of the WWI and Blood and Iron/Verdun regiment 84th Infantrie d'regiment [both are recruiting. Add calicoyoda on Steam if you want to join either]
