In desperate need of help!
« on: December 17, 2013, 05:32:22 am »
I am trying to find an original WW2 German, non-transitional, helmet in my size. Problem is, my dome is fucking massive:

62.5cm, 77/8 hat size (USA), 69/70 shell size.

The group I joined will absolutely NOT budge on me getting a very good quality repro, and I have been look for months now. Pleas help!

Godson, he just said he needed an Original, not a Repro.

Hey petsch, thats bit retarded of your group to force you getting Original despite your size issue. No such thing as original in that size at least i think. I mean i was told if you have smaller dome, go for original, if you dont, go for repro.  Im in the 275th ID a Progressive unit, they do approve the M35 Repro from Hessen. So I dont see why 2nd SS would reject that at all.

I was also recommended
http://www.militarytour.com/Reproductions/WW11/German/Uniforms/M35grn.htm

I too have bigger noggin, 7 5/8   I have to buy repro one in 7 1/2 despite it would be a tight fit for me. But I must deal with it.

Your likely joining the wrong company if they refuse to compromise like that.
Of course, I also think lines should be able to move in double rank without having emotional breakdowns.

Like I said, if they're so adamant about it looking aged, get a repro aged by another reenactor. It'll look great, yeah, but you'll have to pay money for it.

No way you're getting an original with your melon.

Search in IMA, they're good and National Geographic approves.

Trust me, Millander... I have thought about this. But, the problem is, there are no other active groups in my area... These guys are the only large (100+ people) and active group near me, and the closest event is still 4 hours away.

I've been sending lots of emails out to the big collectors and companies that I get reproduction items from. I got a hilarious message reply from Hessen-Antique:

"... Our reproduction helmets are some of the best you can buy... In our 30 years of business, we have only ever seen one helmet in your size, Kyle."

Petsch,  I kinda noticed this but I think "closest unit" thing doesnt just work around in ww2 reenacting.

I mean my unit is chicagoland based. I thought it mean events are Chicagoland. Like my ACW unit are Chicagoland and most of our livinghistory and meetings are done in Chicagoland with few battle also.

However, for my ww2 unit, none of the event this year are in Chicagoland. I have one in whole another state, Michigan. And used to plan a event in another state, Indiana (cancelled)   and last weekend, was in deep in the heart of Illinois.  Our members vary from Illinois and Wisconsin.   So I would assume, no matter what unit you will join, the events are more likely to be far. Maybe you could find another unit thats not really based near you but attend nearly all the same event as 2nd SS would attend.  Just my observation so far.

There are other units in Jersey, like the 3.PGD which is a very good Heer unit. As for SS, I'm not sure but I know there has to be more than just the 1.SS you're trying to get into.

There were big headed guys in the WH, but a VERY few amount. People were just not as generally big back then. Get a repro.

Oh man, imagine if we Napoleonic re-enactors had to fit in the original uniforms. Especially the Dutch. People are easily four inches feet taller now. And...you know...broader  :P

I couldn't imagine even being lucky to find authentic items for Napoleonic reenacting. It'd fall apart in the first event! Haha.
