Developer Blog 14 - Artillery Sabre & Music

Hello and welcome back to our Developer Blog. We are incredibly sorry for the delay but we have been unbelievably swamped with developing Battle Cry of Freedom and as such we have a few things we would like to show you!

So, we have been working on several pieces of equipment, but one of our favourites is the “Light Artillery Saber Model 1840”. The sabre was one of the most used weapons during the civil war. It was a single-edged, 42 inches long curved blade and featured a metal scabbard that could also be used as a sort of wack thump ouch improvised weapon of a sort, if necessary. Yes if the idea is popular we can have a look at including this as a feature.

Besides that we have some new ear candy for you. So make sure to turn your speakers up and listen to this awesome piece of music.
To listen to the sounds, take a look at the Developer Blog on our Website, here (https://www.fsegames.eu/devblog14.html).

I’m sure many of our backers and probably quite a few of you loyal folk following development would quite like to know where these funds are going. Contrary to popular belief, the marketing muppets have managed to curb some of the teams more bizarre appetites and instead of ordering vast quantities of vodka and cookies, we have dedicated our resources to acquiring much needed support and technology for BCoF!

As well as purchasing our Unity engine licenses, we have been making huge amounts of progress in our 3d visuals and sounds. You have seen many of these so far, but we are actually way ahead of schedule on this front thanks to your support! As you have seen we have also managed to buy the equipment needed to record our animations with, and now have the resources to record as many animations as we can possibly think of!

The only thing holding us back from a prototype right now is the extremely complicated scripting Vincenzo is currently creating, and as Merlin once said “magic takes both time and patience”. Or he would if he knew anything about magic.
That being said BCoF is very much on track and we are all getting very excited about the prospect of an early-game prototype and alpha release looming in the future. Once again, we cannot thank you enough for your support, and we hope that the game we are creating will be more than worth your wait!

P.S. And also some good news for you donators, your wallpapers should be on their way soon enough!

Thanks for reading.

Everytime I hear these music pieces, I less and less regret paying the $30 for the soundtrack. I love all these tunes. They fit the mood of the Civil War so perfectly. As for the sword, hot diggidy damn. Excellent work!

Why were those fins put on the saber scabbards?

A lot of scabbards have them. Actually never asked myself why, but I guess because of stability and maybe because its better to use as weapon ? ???

Not sure.

That's a weapon with which you can thump ouch wack people with in an unorthodox way.

And oh my, that is a beautiful piece of music!

Finally got around to listen to the music now.

Such a wonderful piece of art. The longer the wait the more I get hyped.
This will definally be one of my favorite game of the year ('13 or '14) and I know it will be good. I can just feel it man.

Keep up the good work Vince, Olaf, Admiral, Beaver, Rycon and all of you from FSE. You deserve my applause yet again.

It's to protect the tip of the scabbard and sword in the event that the weapon ends up being scraped along the ground, or struck against something.

The sword looks nice, though I wouldn't trust the blade with my life, given the rather bad state it appears to be in. Also, the taper of the blade near the point doesn't look quite right.. something seems off, though I can't tell exactly what.

Why were those fins put on the saber scabbards?

Because blacksmiths put all their time into making high quality swords, so that when it came to making the scabbards, it was a simple metal mold/press that would craft them, and little ironing out was done as it wasn't very important to. That, and if they got rid of those fins, there would have been a chance of the whole bloody thing falling apart! Sorry if this was answered already. ;)

Sorry for not getting to this as soon as the thread went up. I'm really shocked by the progress of this so far. I'm vey excited for this, and still plan on donating.

The music is extremely generic and repetitive. You may as well have got actual band music of the period or have invested in better audio effects instead.

Very awesome stuff! And I love the music, though I feel it's slightly too "bombastically cinematic", but maby that's what you're going for. At any rate, It's really quality stuff. You guys are going to be hard-pressed to pick the right song for the Main Menu! :O

Oh, I'm big on "big" music, such as owning almost every album of 2 Steps from Hell. I live on that stuff, but I'm a  critic on the idea that the music I've heard for this game so far sounds very fitting for big movie scenes, and not something your subconscious would be able to handle hearing for a year straight while playing in-game combat. The music is amazing, I'm just wondering if maby it's too amazing for the purpose  it's trying to serve... that is, unless they're planning to use all these songs as the title screen theme song(s)? The main menu can always be big and cinematic, but they've got 3 songs like that so far...
Title: Re: Developer Blog 14 - Artillery Sabre & Music
Post by: MackCW on April 05, 2013, 06:24:25 pm
I see your point as each one sounds like a main theme. But there is a lot going on in the background that none of us are aware of. I'm sure they've got it handled.

Especially since in the FAQ they talk about fiddle tunes. I'm guessing this is where a lot of the ingame music will go.

Aye, I'm thinking that too, and about the FAQ saying they'll use actual civil war music.
As far as main menu music ideas go, I have a personal opinion about it, and that's that I think, rather than a "suspense and drama with a hint of desperate heroes" soundtrack, it would be more fitting and novel(and rally up and excite folks just as effectively) if it were... how to find the right words; big yet march-like, American with a hint of traditional sound and a sense of, as I would put it, "that southern giddy hurrah!" feeling(I'm sure Yankees have something similar to that feeling; we are the same country, after all). Maby even something I could sit at the title screen and just hum along with spirit! :O
