Cavalry in NaS 1.0 [discussion]
« on: February 14, 2015, 11:59:51 pm »
So, since a while, I always got complains about the cavalry in the mod.
In nearly every line battle, cavalry is not allowed to fire from horseback or to reload on the move.

But for me, thats the meaning of the cavalry! They are fast shock troops, which are able to fire on the move and reload, while having a bad accuracy.

I got asked, if its possible to remove the shooting on horseback and to remove the moving ability for reloading carbines.

So, you guys got any suggestions, ideas.. what can be done with the cavalry in the next patch?

Well, I agree with you, Cavalries are made to be like that! irl, they did use guns on horsebacks, even indians did. I mean they should allow FOH, because this is how it realistic, no matter how "OP" is it, then be more opper :D

It should be allowed and more communities should allow it, its the whole aspect that makes cavalry good in events. And pretty much cavalry's job in the Civil War.

Personally I have no complaints, I think it would be okay if we just kept it as is. Of course we should get more weapons.

Firing in Horse and reloading in horse must be allowed man! Also, the carbines are small like that for the purpose of being used easily on horseback. Anyway, firing on horseback is not easy, so i see no problem in allowing it!

The Problem is that when they are standing still that the actually have a pretty good accuracy, and most of the time players stop (when they shoot from horseback). A solutuion for this could be that it would only be possible to shoot from horseback if you are riding, and not standing still.

Not possible in the engine!

Maybe I should just remove the cavalry completly, if most of you demand that much hard rules. Then there is NO reason to keep cavalry ingame.

Please keep it for the history of the real US Cavalry. I mean, if the majority doesn't like it, don't use the cavalry then? Right now, I think my opinion, cav should be able to reload on horseback, not while riding, but while the horse is standing still and reload.

Ok so I'm not certain what experience you guys have had but here is my two cents. Cavalry in the civil war almost never engaged on horseback, they were used as skirmishers and highly mobile infantry. Because of this I think that reloading on the move is a pretty reasonable expectation considering their weapons but then again I thought sharps rifles were reasonable so maybe I'm wrong on that account. However firing off horseback with one of those carbines from horseback would be a nightmare and early in the war when cavalry did charge on occasion it was not uncommon for cavalrymen to be dehorsed by the recoil of their carbines. Now pistols are a different story but past the first few years of the war nobody would think of firing the sharps carbines of a horse and I believe this should be reflected in gameplay.

To put this into perspective a sharpes carbine fires a 475 grain bullet,
a 30-06 M1 Grand used a 200 grain bullet during the second world war,
today's men in the Middle East use 75 grain 5.56mm rounds.

The average Civil War soldier was 5ft 8in. and estimates put cavalrymen's average weight as about 100 pounds average as they were the lightest soldiers. They carried approx. 20 pounds of equipment on their person (during patrols and with realistic supply expectations)
Modern soldiers average 5ft 11in. and on average will weight appox. 160 pounds.
They carry approx. 45 pounds of equipment on their person during patrols (up to 120 in some cases but that is by no means the rule).

Basically firing a sharps on horseback is a bad idea.

The solution:

Be able to:
-fire on horseback
-reload on horseback
-reload on the move on horseback
-reload on the move by foot

Acurracy:
-More accurate than revolvers
-Less acurate than muskets
