A cannonball fired out of an 12 pounder had an speed of around 550 meters a second. Please tell me how to see it (a small ball on a battlefield full of smoke) and then react fast enough to get to the ground.

I think by "dodging" they meant not to throw on the ground if a cannon fired at their general direction.

5'7", 170 lbs. Really stout, the build and mentality of a grenadier, and if what I've read is correct the requirement to qualify as a grenadier is 173.5cm, or 68 inches, though the average height was 170.25cm, or 67 inches(5'7"). If this is accurate I believe I could be a grenadier, however it is probably more realistic to say that I would be line infantry.

Its likely though that you actually would have been a lot smaller back then given that youre just todays average size. (People back then were much smaller and 1,70 was probably what 1,90-95 is to us today)
