Can somebody help me with making a new skin for a unit?

I simply don't know where to start, and/how to edit or make a new skin for a unit. I want to try and make one for my regiment, the 25th Regiment of Foot. I have paint.net if that helps but I simply don't know where to start. Sorry if this sounds abit cheesy but I just need help:3.
