Star of David on Ottoman Banner
« on: December 24, 2016, 01:57:13 am »
Has anyone ever noticed that the Ottoman/Turkish banner in NW has a six-pointed star (Star of David) instead of a regular five-pointed star? The real flag with the star and crescent is only five-pointed.

Sure, it's not really a Star of David, rather just a six-pointed star.

If my memory serves me right they did have a six pointed star on their flag at one point. Flags are tricky things in this era as countries are only just starting to regulate what they should be like officially so you get variants, I believe the US did not regulate the exact pattern of the stars on their flag for quite some time. These articles might explain a bit more:

Interesting articles. I tried looking to see if they ever had a six-pointed star, but hadn't found anything suggesting they might have. The six-pointed stars shown on those websites aren't exactly like the ones in-game, but are pretty close.

The amount of points in the star actually wasn't regulated until some year in the mid 1800s which I have forgotten, they even had versions with seven or eight points. However, the five pointed star has always been used in the Imperial Standard and replaced all other versions with the Turkish Republic being founded. There was no "real" Ottoman flag during the Napoleonic Wars because it was not regulated after all.

The number of Ottoman flag-types is absolutely ENORMOUS, however there are NO English or German sources known to me giving details on the use of a six-pointed star in the landforces. That does not mean it wasn't used though.
However merchants used a six-pointed star during the 1800s.
