Developer Blog 8 - Drum Tunes

Welcome back to the weekly delve into Battle Cry of Freedom’s development! This week we would like to talk to you a little about some more of our atmospheric and aesthetic assets.

As you know, one of our main concerns for Napoleonic Wars, and one that has carried on into our new Project Battle Cry of Freedom, is that of historical accuracy. We don’t just claim that and put in some random props, we mean it. So this means you will not only be seeing correct uniforms, weapons and battlefields, you will also be hearing proper voice acting and authentic music from the period.
To produce the music assets we have hired Mark Beecher, who is a very talented musician who has created some wonderful sounds for us.
Feel free to check out the two drum beats below to judge for yourself!

To listen to the sounds, take a look at the Developer Blog on our Website, here. (https://www.fsegames.eu/devblog8.html)

Mark also took the time to write a short description of each:

“Here are a couple of Drum Tracks, from the book The Drummers' and Fifers' Guide by George B. Bruce and Daniel D. Emmett (New York 1862), which was widely used throughout the Civil War. The 2 selections are The General ("Is to be beat only when the whole army is to march, and is the signal to strike the tents and prepare for departure")and Quickstep - Biddy Oats.”

Thanks again for your patience and support, progress is being made and we are really starting to see it all fitting together. We are also looking forward to the release of the last patch for Napoleonic Wars, so keep your eyes open and be prepared for swashbuckling naval combat!

This looks promising, I'd love to hear the in-game songs once they're in. That is, when the game is playable...

Good stuff FSE, any news on voice actors? I liked the NW battle cries and tutorial to be specific.

I suppose that this means that musician class will still only press one button and not actually be "playing" the songs themselves?

Good stuff FSE, any news on voice actors? I liked the NW battle cries and tutorial to be specific.

The voices will most likely be recorded at a later date when FSE have a good idea as to what features will likely require voices ingame and what type of voices will be required. Its usually best to get all the voices from one voice actor done within a single session for safety reasons. These reasons include uniformity of recording settings on the day, availability of the actor, uniformity of the actors voice on the day of recording, uniformity of distance from the mic during recording and studio cost if applicable and cost of hiring the actor (don't want to hire twice for a few lines you forgot).

Usually the voices to any game are the last item on the list, as for the faces to the voices we did make a topic for this for NW incase anyone is interested in revisiting it, only some actors had pictures to give me:

Could it be that the drum echoes a bit? Or is it always so (even outside?)

One of my first impressions of Napoleonic Wars was boom!  Kick-ass classical music and prim and proper marches as a whole platoon of soldiers gets torn apart in front of you; a fraction of a second more and you'd be dead.  It certainly caught a victorian, romanticized impression of war.

That said, I wonder what the game music will be like for Battlecry of Freedom.

If you check the NW drum tracks you will notice the same thing (same studio did the recordings for NW). This is not so apparent in-game however. It may be that the studio has some resonance. or the mic is close to the drums possible causing a pickup of internal drum resonance.  Either way its not really that noticeable ingame.

I think it is. It sounds kind of weird hearing the drums playing in game. They definitely sound like they were recorded in a studio.

Must agree somewhat with both of you. Yes you can hear it's been recorded in a studio but I don't think it's that noticeable.
Tbh, I think it's more noticeable here, but then again, prolly won't be that bad ingame.

You can hear it's recorded in studio (BadumTsss!) but I barely notice it in NW (except if I'm really bored :p ).

So it'll do the job just fine  8)

You would be surprised at how much drums seem to echo even outside, especially in built up areas. They are a very beautiful instrument once you learn a bit more about them. (Yes I'm a little bit of a drummer).

Sadly we don't have a definite release date yet.

The game will be on sale for less than 25 Euros from Steam and other retailers.

That is very true, I've been in Music festivals in Scotland where Pipers and Drums are playing, this was a huge, huge field, and we were 30 mins walk just to see them.

And whenever I am in Glasgow or Edinburgh I hear drums, Glasgow is full of buildings, so they bounce of each other and you can hear them anywhere.

Okay actually this is what I meant:

1. The Drums are played too perfectly. On the battlefield even a well trained musician would have a hard time keeping up with the pace with cannon shells exploding around him and musketballs whizzing over his head. Even if the drummer is getting all the beats right, like he should be, I think it should sound more urgent and rushed to match the feel of battle.
2. The drums sound too loud and contained. You're right, it isn't a huge deal, but there's always been something uncanny sounding about the drums when I hear them, and I placed my finger on the studio recording.

Have you considered attempting to record outdoors? I know it's more professional to record in a studio and there's much less that can go wrong, but you did say you're going for the realism approach, so I think it could be something for you guys to think about.

Glad to see progress for the tasks at hand. The tunes will add to the overall, or so it shall be seen in due time. Also interested in the Napoleonic wars patch to come, will also wait to see how this has been incorporated to function.

- Made cannonballs lose more force on ground hit and bounce less to make them less unstoppable.
- Made pistols some more accurate, it will now really hit within the player visible circle, to balance them, the reload is now slightly slower though.
- Decreased the damage the rifle in melee would inflict, they were more powerful than most real melee weapons

 What the fuck?

2. Don't post useless rabble.
3. Don't necro with useless rabble.
