I would like to point out that corporal-fourrier, or brigade-fourrier, aren't 'corporal first classes' but corporal-quatermasters, in charge of the paperwork and bagage of their respective companies.
Keeping that in mind, in Dutch, a corporal is 'korporaal', while fourrier means corporal quatermaster as well. No first class rubbish.
Finally, a French sergeant-major was a company sergeant-major. There was the rank of Adjudant sous-officier, which was the highest ranking NCO in the batallion.
