Mass Effect: Andromeda
« on: February 17, 2017, 08:10:08 pm »

Surprised to see there wasn't a Mass Effect: Andromeda thread or even just a general Mass Effect thread.

What is it?

ME: Andromeda is the 4th installment of the Mass Effect series. It's an action-RPG set in a distant future where humans have developed spaceflight and have started colonizing the galaxy. Andromeda itself is set 600 years after the events of Mass Effect 3, featuring a brand new story and cast. The story follows Ryder, a pathfinder and explorer for the Andromeda Initiative: a project where a group of colonists and explorers set out to the Andromeda galaxy with the intent of settling it. As with the previous games, it offers an action-RPG experience with various squadmates to team up with and planets to explore. New gameplay options include being able to craft stuff, a new class sytem and the return of a ground vehicle to travel in, like the Mako from the first game.

Developer: Bioware
Publisher: EA
Release date: March 21 (NA) and March 23 (EU) 2017
Available on: PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One

Origin link, in case anyone wants that...

Personally I'm sceptically optimistic about this game. The new changes and additions look good on paper but I am not sure about Bioware. Despite being a massive Mass Effect fan, I'm not gonna preorder and will be awaiting reviews before even considering buying it. Anyone else got any thoughts about it?

Have been waiting on this for a LONG time now. Massive fan of the series.

Yup, I just concluded my 3rd playthrough through the Original Trilogy. It's still such a great series of games. I recommend it to everyone.

I also recommend everyone to get the Citadel DLC for Mass Effect 3. It is without a doubt, the best piece of DLC ever.

I do very much like the Citadel DLC, frankly it's a nice and hilarious change of pace, I don't get the reason why it was made in the first place.

So I played about an hour.... What they said about facial animations is true (they're pretty bad)

One thing I did really admire though... was my keyboard. Apparently it links with ME:A and it's dynamic. My control keys IO can use at a moment light up (R lights up light when I am out of ammo; WASD are white, F is red) and it changes when I do certain actions. And it changes into the AI logo in cutscenes, which is neat.

Probably one of the very few old-timers here who hasn't been a regimental leader.

I've played about five hours now and I can honestly say the game is pretty great.

The gameplay is incredibly smooth and not being restricted by classes means you can create any loadout you could possibly want. A lot of freedom and replayability value. Toying around with a biotic loadout is incredibly fun and rewarding. Might try to create a sort of sentinel like build.

I also appreciate that the game feels more RPG like than Mass Effect 3 did. The auto dialogue is gone, plus dialogue is no longer restricted to happy, neutral or angry. It feels more natural for sure. Scrapping the renegade and paragon system was also good. There's an actual inventory system, like in ME1, and of course there's crafting which I haven't tried extensively yet.

As for the animations...they're not great, that is very true. They're on about the same level as Dragon Age: Inquisition. They're not terrible either, it's just that I had kinda hoped facial technology had progressed a bit further than this. Some characters also have some very weird walking animations. But honestly, it's not bothering me that much.

That's my experience with it so far. I'm interested to see how this progresses.
